March Parish Notices __________________
The Club AGM is less than two weeks away (Thursday March 19th) and apart from lengthy discussion on the recent Sussex CCC 2014 accounts, three Board Members have retired, in accordance with the Club rules, yet there are only 2 places up for grabs if all three re-apply for selection. The Two Pages That Matter They are: Richard Holste, Bob Warren and Jon Filby. This does not include any new people who may have applied to join the Board. Who may these two new Board Members be? The announcement will be made at the AGM. The ‘Sussex Cricket Society’ (SCS) are holding their next evening meeting on Wednesday 11th March when former Derbyshire player Tony Borrington is the guest speaker. Tony played for Derbyshire CCC between 1970 and 1981, representing the County in 272 matches and scoring over 7000 runs in all forms of the game. After cricket, he followed a career in education and became deputy headmaster at ‘Grace-Dieu’, an independent catholic preparatory school near Thringstone, Leicestershire, where he teaches geography. The meeting begins at 7.30pm in the Spen Cama Pavillion. For more information about the 'SCS' click below. scs.councilcricketsocieties.com/CSR & Partnerships Manager Faye Russell continues her excellent club community initiative after holding the second ‘Ground Cuppa’ in the Boundary Rooms on March 2nd. The afternoon event included coffee or tea, biscuits and Bingo all for a price of £1.50.The event attracted around 20 people with the Bingo being especially popular. No Sussex players were invited along unlike the inaugural one. The initiative is run in partnership with ‘Friends of the Elderly’ and the ‘Be a Friend’ campaign to reach out to local people who may feel lonely or isolated. By offering them the chance to pop into the ground for a cuppa and a chat, it could help to combat the loneliness some might feel and create connections with other people. The next get-together is on Tuesday 7th April between 10.30am and 12.30pm. Similar to the recent event there is the added attraction of a ‘Beetle Drive’ while those attending will be invited to stay on to watch the friendly match against Surrey. An attractive Mother’s Day Lunch on Sunday March 15th is being strongly marketed by the Club For £25 a head (Children £12.50). There is a welcome drink on arrival, a three-course dinner (including a Sunday Roast option), and FREE parking. Under 4’s dine for free - and there’s even a FREE gift for Mother!
It is a 12noon arrival for dining from 12.30pm, with the last orders for Lunch at 2.30pm.
There is also an alternative option to Mother’s Day Lunch – an Afternoon Tea.
Between 2.30pm and 5.30pm in the Spen Cama Pavilion there’ll be a wide range of cakes, scones with clotted cream and jams as well as smoked salmon, tuna, cucumber, egg and ham sandwiches.
There will also be a selection of teas, infusions or fresh brewed filter coffee and sparkling wines for the adults, and all this for only £12.50 per person. Children are £5 each and Under 4’s FREE.
To book either of these options or for more information call Nicola Pavey on 01273 827106 or e-mail: nicola.pavey@sussexcricket.co.uk

Who may these two new Board Members be?
The AGM agenda shows that Dick Holste is being nominated for Vice-Presidency. I assume this may indicate that he is retiring from the board in exchange for the new appointment. BTW, what do vice-presidents do? Is it a position with benefits but no responsibilities?

fb, I never quite understand the reason behind being made a club Vice-President. One of the eccentricities of county cricket, perhaps, as the club already have 35 of them. Why do you require more? I do realise this is the equivalent of a club offering past star players and hierarchy their own form of MBE - and that I applaud - for their past industry and loyalty but does being made a VC have any relevance? One presumes Dick Holste can carry on being a Board Director if re-elected. For example, Jim Parks is a VP but was also club President at the same time. No club work comes with the post. I note Holste is up against Murray Goodwin and Tony Buss. Surely, Holste is the best choice? He was in the group of Muskateers that overthrew the Sussex Committee in March 1997 and has an impressive CV both outside the Club and for Sussex CCC. Also, I note David Bowden has been nominated as President to take over from Jim Parks. An excellent choice. Most surprisingly he is not a Vice-President. I am sure that will come later. Noteworthy Sussex CCC VPs include Chris Adams, Mushtaq Ahmed, Robin Marlar, Peter Moores, John Snow and Ted Dexter. www.eastbourneherald.co.uk/news/local/richard-holste-s-mbe-1-5665867Meanwhile, will Jon Filby be re-elected as Vice-Chairman automatically or is he stepping down? I note our Chairman comes up for retirement in March 2017. It will be interesting to see if Jim then stands for re-election again and wishes to carry on in this role. He has already held the post for 7 years which is a major accomplishment. Or is their a time limit? Anyone know who the longest serving Sussex Chairman is and for how many years? The shortest, of course, being Ken Hopkins... all of 2 weeks. The Members rebellion saw to that.

I doubt there is any limit to the number of vice-presidents you can have - subject, of course, to the capacity of the tea room.

Well done to Zac Toumazi for attracting further sponsorship for the Hove county ground - the Boundary Rooms is now officially known as the ‘Focus Group Boundary Rooms’ or FGBR - a three year deal which all helps the off-field commercial revenue to nudge towards the club dream of earning £1m a year - but where is the line drawn between sponsoring off every scrap of club ownership and the respectful homage to what is Sussex CCC? www.sussexcricket.co.uk/news-1/focus-group-sussex-s-boundary-rooms-to-be-sponsored-by-focus-groupFor example, will the presently named ‘Spen Cama Pavilion’ remain or will the temptation come to sponsor it off to a local car chain or financial investments company? Have the club lain down set rules of what can and can’t be touched within the ground? Should there not be more homage paid to the great Sussex cricketers of the past? The ‘Long Room’ dining hall is no-more the ‘Ted Dexter Restaurant’ and the pavilion cafe/drinks counter is only called the ‘Jim Parks Bar’ by Members with less senior moments. As the club facilities become ever more smothered by weddings, conferences, lunches, business networking events and the like, will the spirit and history of the club be lost for the sake of earning an extra buck? Chris Goodman, Director of Focus Group (front) and Ralph Gilbert, Managing Director (back row, middle) launch the Boundary Rooms sponsorship with Chief Executive of Sussex Cricket Zac Toumazi, and Sussex players Michael Yardy and Steve MagoffinShirt sponsorship is widely accepted as a means for counties to make additional money, yet in recent years ground naming rights have become increasingly popular as car manufacturers, airline colossi and local business all stamp their brand names over what is essentially a cricket club. Lancashire gained £10m from ‘The Emirates Airline‘ for a 10 year sponsorship ground naming deal. And our own club's ground is now called 'The BrightonandHoveJobs.com' although, 99% of supporters and the media still refer to it as Hove. So, could we ever see a time when ground toilets will be sponsored, match balls, match pitches, even stumps and bails, where umpires may walk to the pitch wearing glowing effervescent tops advertising a local estate agent? Where is the line drawn between making money from sponsorship and paying respectful homage to the noble sport and the county cricket club? As self-help gurus may point out, healthy relationships require constant negotiation and balance. Perhaps, the club could let their Members and supporters know what the Sussex CCC policy is on such matters going forward.

Congratulations to Freddie Flintoff for developing the post-modern retired sportsman. The days of owning a pub, scrambling around to find a coaching job or using their former celebrity cache to become a financial services consultant, salesman and the like has transformed into a media star pandering to the wonderful and whacky, shallow and superficial, world of gloss and triviality. The King of the Media JungleFlintoff is a unique personality - he is "The People’s Prince" - and winning the Australian version of I’m a Celebrity - Get Me Out of Here at the weekend whilst in the depths of the South African jungle has transcended his stardom to new heights of trifling tomfoolery. Eating giant cockroaches and kangaroo penises is only to be expected when you pander to the general public’s appetite of demeaning the very stars they worship. Somehow this deception creates a better balance between us and them, even though the celebrity is being paid £200,000 to make a fool of themselves or £10,000 for every idiotic slip, scream and whispered word. Yet, one has to admire Flintoff for taking on the rough and tumble of the post-retirement age. He has followed the ‘How to Become The People’s Prince’ by the page. Flagellate yourself over past cricketing demeanors by blaming depression; showing off your courage by morphing into a boxer; offering determination and grit by overcoming injuries which medical experts deemed ‘unovercomable’; and the final Houdini trick of returning to cricket after retiring and making a huge impact on the Australian consciousness with his on-field tribute to Elvis Presley. Freddie is a star and always shall be. No doubt, Flintoff will be given the key to Australia, where he and his family may settle down prompting a move into politics. If Reagan can do it why not Flintoff? Flintoff - The Next Australian PM?Meanwhile, the ‘People’s Prince’ management will be frantically seeking other avenues to show off their in-vogue brand. Perhaps, ‘The Jump’ is too beneath him? While attending ‘The Celebrity Big Allotment Challenge’ or ‘The Great British Sewing Bee’ is not his forte? Perhaps, Freddie and Mary Berry could make an odd couple appearance as he attempts to bake a cake with cockroaches and kangaroo penises? So much to choose from! But not everyone is enjoying such a successful chameleon-like transformation. Matthew Hoggard, the likable cheeky chappy who lacks the Phil Tufnell cheeky and the Freddie Flintoff chappy is having far more difficulty after retiring. A few beers short of a six-pack, Hoggy is finding it tough to acclimatise to the dog eat dog world that professional cricketers are somatised to. Recently, Hoggard accepted a job with a new Welsh start-up financial services company specialising in currency exchange. An odd choice for Hoggy whom when touring overseas had all his pounds and pence turned into other currencies by the England management. While he may have Yorkshire grit, a tough, hard-nosed financial salesman, building up a new client-base through charm, guile and oozing personality is not him. Ironically, Hoggy running a friendly pub on the Yorkshire Moors is more his city suit. While one wishes him every good luck in this new venture, do not be surprised if in a few years time Hoggy will be looking to buy a public house with unused Australian dollars.

I think Freddie should concentrate on the commentating. He is definitely of the Tony Grieg style in the few times I've heard him up to now. If they can find a suitable Bill Lawry type foil, we'd be set!

pm,
I wonder whether Flintoff has the "intelligence gravitas" to match the likes of Atherton, Knight, Gower and Hussain. Agreed, Phil Tufnell has found a niche with his 'cheeky chappy' approach as has to a lesser extent Swann but Flintoff is neither one or the other.
His recent Australian win should kickstart his media career Down Under. His rendition of 'Elvis Presley' while on the BBL field with mic turned on, went down like a rapturing 'Hound Dog' with the Australian public. So, don't be surprised if he's driving his 'Chippy van' around the outback shortly.

Hove Ground Outlet Rental Update __________________________________The newly created outlet at the back of the South West Corner stand between the club shop and Newbery is almost complete and now available for renting and moving in. ‘Graves & Jenkin’ the Brighton letting agent, explained there had been some interest shown but as of yet no contract has been signed. Given the club want an annual £29,000 (all inclusive), it is uncertain what retail outlet might be interested as for 6 months of the year, footfall is barely present. But as 'G&J' point out, the price is negotiable. This new outlet is an excellent move by Sussex CCC as the club shop which took up a vast area before "lost" over £4,000 in 2014. One hopes the Club’s online marketing company ‘Pleece’ works hard to expand and develop the outlet’s web presence during 2015. Meanwhile, construction work for the 6 offices in the North East Corner that gained planning permission in early March should begin in late September with companies able to move in from New Year’s Day 2016. Five will be built from scratch and the sixth is a conversion of the present bar/catering building. Each one will be around 65 square metres in size with full office specifications including air conditioning. Some of the units will have pitchside views. There will be on-site parking for both staff and visitors. The club estimate that the offices will create approximately 30 new jobs and bring the number of employees based at the Hove ground to around 130.
As operations manager Ian Waring says, “It will provide another vital revenue stream for the club and, importantly, it will add to our long term plan of being a unique facility available for the use of a wide range of members of the local community all year round, and not just during the cricket season.” The rental price is uncertain as ‘Graves & Jenkin’ who will almost certainly take on the lettings are presently in discussion with the club. As office space rents for less than retail, one expects the annual rental for each office to be £20,000+ or potentially £120,000+ a year additional income for Sussex CCC. _______________________________ If interested contact Ian Waring on: ian.waring@sussexcricket.co.uk Tel: 01273 827108

It is interesting that reading between the media lines, Chris Gayle at Somerset for the early part of the 'T20 Blast' is still not a done deal, given the Windies problematic and ongoing back injury. He let Somerset down a few years ago, so do not be surprised if this doesn't occur again. Gayle has a rigorous and physically demanding IPL tournament to face before venturing to Taunton and there is a growing view that he may break down again. If not, his first 'T20 Blast' match is, typically, against Sussex on Friday May 22nd at Taunton, so long as Gayle's IPL 'Royal Challengers Bangalore' have not reached the knockout stages. His final appearance is scheduled to be at Cardiff against Glamorgan on June 13. www.espncricinfo.com/county-cricket-2015/content/story/854419.htmlWill KP be playing at Hove in less than 2 weeks time?Meanwhile, it is unclear whether Kevin Pietersen will be appearing for Surrey against Sussex at Arundel Castle in the 'T20 Blast' on June 14th. As ever with soap operas, there is plenty of dialogue still to be written before that date. As to the Sussex v Surrey friendly match on April 7th and 8th at Hove, will Pietersen be turning out? If he does, Hove may experience an attendance larger than a typical Championship match day. I reckon it's odds on to happen. KP will be keen to start amassing runs as soon as possible.

A feature on the impending 'Robin Marlar Cricket Memorabilia Auction' has been published in the Sussex FREE glossy magazine 'etc' today. The magazine has a large distribution around the county. Hopefully, this will help the advertising and marketing of the auction which occurs on Saturday April 11th at the Hove ground 'Boundary Rooms', along with a viewing day on Friday the 10th. Catalogues and further info can be gained from Jon Filby at: jonfilby@blueyonder.co.uk The magazine 'physical edition' is released on Monday. Amongst the many Sussex outlets, the club shop will distribute it. The Website Versionetcmag.net/cricket-auction/The Physical Version (scroll to pages 120/121)edition.pagesuite-professional.co.uk//launch.aspx?pbid=cdbd86eb-0ed9-41e5-a590-031651c44a1cAs it's only two weeks before the BIG day, publicity is growing and 'Latest TV', the recently formed local station for Brighton and Sussex, are already booked up and will be in attendance, interviewing people on Friday and filming the Saturday proceedings (Freeview Channel 8). Best of luck to Sussex CCC and Robin Marlar for a really successful day.
