Jason Gillespie: The Coach with more “Sub” than “Stance?”
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________
Jason Gillespie has now completed a two week self-isolation stint after returning to Australia and is ready to thrust himself into his new cricketing challenge. But what exactly is this? After his contentious departure from Hove, where he broke his extended contract which ‘should’ have kept him at Sussex until the end of 2022, local sports journalist, Steve Bone, wrote recently in the
West Sussex Times, “…his departure provoked a mixed reaction from supporters - with some thanking him for his efforts and saying he would be missed, but others pointing to a lack of trophies or promotion, or saying they felt let down he had left at this point…”
More 'Sub' than 'Stance'?Dizzy is now coaching the Southern Australian Sheffield Shield side, nicknamed the
West End Redbacks, taking over from Jamie Siddons, Gillespie’s former State captain. To add pressure to his new appointment, Gillespie will continue to oversee the BBL
Adelaide Strikers, as a decision was made, after a commissioned review headed by Michael Hussey for the South Australia Cricket Association (SACA), that both the BBL and domestic cricket teams would be brought under the control of one coach.
And to add even more pressure, the Redbacks are in the doldrums, just as Yorkshire were back in 2011. The Sheffield Shield side have won only four matches out of 29 during their last three seasons. Have a guess who their Captain is? Yep, Travis Head!
As expected, JG’s Twitter profile image has transformed from Sussex CCC to the colour of the Redbacks and his tweets are all about the Sheffield Shield side. Gillespie’s new team takes on Tasmania today at the Karen Rolton Oval for their Round 2 clash (second game). The squad are: Weatherald, Hunt, Davis, Head (c), Ferguson, Nielsen (wk), Scott, Sayers, Richardson, Agar and Pope. The
Redbacks lost their first match to continue their very poor form during the last three years.

www.saca.com.au/news/gillespie-named-west-end-redbacks-coach/2020-08-19Under the banner of ‘A New Era’, SACA CEO, Keith Bradshaw, then said, “The men’s head coaching role is the most important in South Australian cricket, and we know that Jason is the right person to invigorate our program and push it forward.” He continued, “He is a proud South Australian with a phenomenal coaching resume behind him. We have seen how he has worked with the Strikers, leading them to their first title, and I know Jason will give it his all to steer the Redbacks in the right direction.” Adding, “He is a quality person, once he starts something he is fully committed.”
Captain HeadGillespie responded, “I’m deeply honoured to be afforded the opportunity to coach the South Australian cricket team. The chance to work with the players, coaches and staff is very exciting. Team SACA is something I’m very much looking forward to being a part of.” Concluding, “I’m very excited!”
Yet, Gillespie has much to prove to Cricket Australia under the guise of SACA, if he wants that coveted role of coaching the National side. He has been close to attaining the position for some years, but first Lehman and then Langer pipped him to the post. Not forgetting the fact that Gillespie was in the mix for the England job a few years back, before another Aussie, Trevor Bayliss, took over.
It seems CA wants to know whether Gillespie’s previous period of success coaching Yorkshire, alongside winning the BBL Trophy with the
Adelaide Strikers in 2018, are not freak events. And why, the Association has given him a tough challenge to overcome. But if he does turn around the
Redbacks present misfortunes, overseeing the Australian team beckons after Langer steps down. Although, this will not be easy, even for a man of 45-years-old and reaching the zenith of his coaching experience and prowess.
Meanwhile, that burning question: Given Gillespie’s successful track record, why did it not rub off on to Sussex? Of course, the pandemic played a role in JG leaving, but even with two more years left on his contract, imho, he would still have gone to the
Redbacks this year, pandemic or no pandemic. The Coronavirus gave him the perfect excuse.
Perhaps, it was merely the pool of Championship players available who were not good enough, unlike at Yorkshire, yet, this would not account for the T20 squad which many reckoned were the strongest in the competition. Failure is never easy to own, but Gillespie failed to deliver at Hove on his past track record. It remains a mystery.
Meanwhile, Rob Andrew has said the process of finding a replacement for JG will not begin until 2021. Presumably, by then, a better understanding of the ECBs and club’s own finances will be known, as well as how the pandemic is playing out. If the financial situation appears dire, then Jason Swift may well be promoted. If a little more optimistic, then a more experienced Coach will be appointed, of which there'll be plenty of potential takers.
