If that's the case JB why have we been playing three bowlers and Zaidi? Why not three bowlers and Beer? It's exactly the same so although your thoughts on it are more ideal the club obviously don't necessarily see it that way. If Wells is a serious contender for a bowling role it makes it even more do-able, on a hot summer's day especially.

I had assumed that Beer would have been playing for Oxfordshire and Wiltshire in thir overlapping Unicorns match today but he doesn't appear on the scorecard on a wicket seemingly made for him totalcricketscorer.com/TCSLive/TCSScorecard.aspx?id=36493. Does anyone know what has happened? Is his conract deal with them finished, or did Sussex recall him in readiness for the crucial T20 against Surrey?

Will Beer, Ed Joyce, Ed Joyce, Will Beer! Clearly they need introducing as the latter doesn't seem to know the former exists.

A disappointing end to Will Beer's period with Oxfordshire in the Minor Counties Unicorns championship as they lose the final to Cumberland within two days www.oxfordshire.cricket/news/huge-disappointment-as-cumberland-beat-oxfordshire-11694/Although initially he was supposed to be available for all 6 pre-final games for Oxfordshire, according to the Cricket Archive website he has only played in 3, scoring 214 runs at 48.20 (2nd in the averages) and taking 19 wickets at 16.05 (3rd in the averages).

HH, would you put minor county cricket at the same level as first division second XI cricket? I only ask as Beer doesn't always dominate, as he should if pressing for first team selection, when he plays for the 2's. I'm a fan of Beer and his plight but perhaps minor county cricket is his level?

I haven't seen Beer play this year, and stats can be very misleading (look, for example at Burgoyne's second XI bowling figures and contrast with his excruciating first team performances), but both for the seconds and for Horsham he has pretty miserable returns in his few matches this year. Maybe it is cause and effect, having been pretty well rejected by Mark Robinson early in the season and exiled to Oxfordshire, he might be thinking "If I can't break through on my bowling then I'll just enjoy my batting at the lower level and not worry too much".

A friend of mine played in the Cumberland team and said that Will was one of only two players who showed application with the bat. He did not feel that he posed much of a threat on a wicket that was very bowler friendly.

That does suggest that whatever special quality he had has rather drifted away from him this season.

That said, they're very good and the seconds are very young, generally, so that's why I think there ain't much in it - but there is a bit, for me. Not as big as the gap between the seconds and the firsts though. I remember a time, probably between 2008-2013, that Beer was an absolute match winner for the seconds with the ball. Somebody should look it up, hopefully they'll be better at it than me but I'm sure in this time he took a lot of Michelles, and took a few sevens as his best. This was the time he should have come in but instead we signed Panesar. I think his confidence has been shot to bits over time, told to bowl quicker, told to give it more twang, but he was bowling sides out. Whether he would have done that in the much classier firsts, who knows. One of the reasons I've always lorded him is that I've wanted to find out all this time - still sodding haven't and probably never will. He ain't let anyone down in his nine odd first class games though, 21 odd and 39 odd are his averages I think - obviously that's the batting average first otherwise I probably would have found out. Maybe he's happy being a one-day player - good one too.

Has signed a new 2-year contract with Sussex ( www.sussexcricket.co.uk/news-1/contract-latest-will-beer-pens-new-two-year-dealwith-sussex) and in the video accompanying the press release he states that he is hoping to spend more time on developing his red-ball skills. He will be going on to the England "spin camp" in Dubai as a net bowler. Slightly surprising in view of the recruitment of Danny Briggs - himself a player who has more often been seen in one-day cricket - and the quote from Mark Robinson “Will has become an integral member of our one-day team, and should prove to be one half of an exciting partnership with Danny Briggs." reads a little oddly. Does that imply two spinners in one-day games, or is the "partnership" actually a way of saying that both four-day and one-day games will always have a spinner in the side henceforward?

You can't seriously be suggesting a change in approach? Robbo is referring solely to one-day cricket. How Luke Wright feels on the subject, I guess we'll probably find out as I'm sure he must have been pretty fed up with last year's spinners in the longer version of the game. I would expect either Briggs or Beer to feature on suitable pitches.

Why, Jonboy? Please explain why we should have to put up with the "same old, same old" approach? Let us look to see in 12 months times how much 1st team cricket Will Beer plays in all formats.
