After crushing Hampshire Somerset now go above Sussex with a 14 point lead from the same number of games. Worcester could also go ahead, just, if they continue their impressive play against Middlesex. It looks beyond Notts to beat Yorkshire though, despite having them at 51 for 3.
All of this makes the bottom half of the table even more of a dogfight with Hampshire currently looking the likeliest to go down. Sussex may be saved by faltering from Notts or Worcester, but it cannot be taken for granted. Every game is crucial, each point is there to be claimed.

You are so right about every point counting for it is the almost total absence of batting bonus points that is the reason Sussex are only 12 pts off the bottom. Having won two more games than all three teams sitting beneath them, the cushion really should be substantially greater.

Meanwhile Yorkshire look ever more awesome. Their two Aussie superstars were playing for the seconds, Root and Bairstow were absent with England (although Bairstow actually returned to replace Hodd today), Test batsmen Lyth and Ballance contributed 14 runs between them - so Gale and Leaning hit centuries and an attack missing Plunkett and Rashid rolls Notts over in 42 overs.

17 wickets fell at Headingley today, yet yesterday Gale and Leaning batted two sessions together untroubled. Apart from Broad, Notts attack was inept. How they could let Fletcher and Carter go on loan and make Gurney 12th man is a mystery. The Notts batting in both innings was spineless and tonight they sit at the bottom of the table in disarray.
A large part of day one was lost to the weather so this victory was completed in just over two playing days. Yorkshire never had to do anything out of the ordinary. There were no special catches or magical run outs. The bowlers just bowled line and length and the batsman contributed to their own downfall. The thing that distinguishes Yorkshire from their rivals is that they show patience when batting and bowling. This simple doctrine reaps rewards.
I expect Yorkshire to canter to the title unless they are seriously hampered by bad weather at crucial times. Paul Collingwood has been quoted as saying that Durham's failure to obtain batting bonus points will undermine their challenge. The match at the Riverside this Sunday will be very interesting. Yorkshire will now lose Lyth, Ballance, Root and Plunkett to this Spanish venture as will Durham Stokes and Wood. However, Rashid returns and probably Finch too.

Joe 'Gat Gun' Gatting is playing for Pants today - 30* at the moment. Good luck to him.

Bairstow (age 25): 8 inns, 3 100s, 3 50s, average 86 Billings (age 24): 11 inns, 0 100s, 0 50s, average 19
So why was Billings preferred to Bairstow in the original ODI squad?

365 partnership for Bairstow and Bresnan.

Batting stuill spineless and in disarray - currently 178-8 v lowly Worcs. But I see they have recalled Fletcher and Carter and both are playing today. Sending them out on loan was quite inexplicable... Re the Bairstow v Billings post above, it was typical England to call up a player who had barely scored a run all season on the strength of last year's form. I am a huge admirer of Billings but my heart sank when he was selected for exactly that reason: I couldn't see him batting long enough to make a serious contribution (I doubt he has stayed at the crease for more than 10 overs in any innings all season) and feared it would be a promising young talent knocked back rather than moving forward. Two failures against the Australians for Kent over the weekend will not have aided his cause, either.

Fletcher and Carter both off the field injured after bowling just 29 balls between them on their return to Notts.
Cutting comment from Hopps on cricinfo, saying Notts aren't in a relegation scrap because for that to be true you have to do some scrapping!

The outcome of today at Trent Bridge could be catastrophic for the loser. If Worcester manage to lose yet another match from a position of strength earlier in the game then the damage to moral could be hard to repair. Conversely if Notts lose then they really will be facing a relegation struggle for the rest of the season. Hampshire's problems should give the winners hope of staying up.

So it is bye bye Worcester then. I really can't see them surviving this latest self inflicted defeat to Notts.

King Jonny of Bairstow - this guy is in the form of his life, he's a run machine. It makes me laugh that Ballance, who has little form and has been given absolutely no chance of finding any, as far as I'm aware, will be given the number three spot when Jonny's here - here's Jonny! Not that it's his fault. Why the hell aren't cook, Bell, Ballance, Root - the frigging lot of them basically, playing? When will we realise that sport is about form, rhythm and confidence. Muppets.

I've just noticed that Northants have beat Derby by three runs, DL method - 155-6 (20) plays 140-5 (18). I hope it was a revised target and they fell short and not DL's calculation after the heavens opened up with them needing 16 off two with five wickets in hand? Surely DL isn't still using the same formula, which is also outdated, for two different formats because 16 off 12 with five in hand is well getable.

The manner in which Yorkshire are coasting to the title is a damming indictment on the other first division counties. In my opinion they are all about as mediocre as each other, capable of the odd good day but incapable of sustaining it. Durham are the best of the rest owing to their home advantages which they exploit well.
Yorkshire are regularly missing at least 4 players, have no effective overseas a rookie opener and the other enduring a poor run of form. However Bairstow, Leaning and Bresnan continually bail them out with remarkable feats and the bowlers do the rest. I watch all my cricket at Headingley but do not support YCCC so consider my comments objective. I just wish that the top of the table was as competitive as the bottom.
