One further thought: an attraction in winning the toss and bowling first on a good surface is that if you have a weakened attack and are not confident of taking 20 wkts against a mighty batting line-up such as Notts, then inserting the opposition may well be your only chance of winning, via a second innings declaration and then chasing a fourth day target. Providing you can avoid the follow-on, of course!

Defensive in so much as we might not get a really big score batting first, and in the 4th innings we could play for the draw.
Not we'll get a score, bowl you out and set you something to chase that will test you. More boldness, take a chance, back your team.
As for Panesar, best away as he doesn't seem to have learnt anything does he? The end is coming, best thing Sussex did, get rid of him. Disruptive to the team. Hasn't taken Essex long to work it out has it.

Anyone at the Members Forum this morning would have hard from Robbo that it was an attacking decision
Granted any luck Notts could have lost many wickets before lunch on Day one like they did on Day 2

Ed is such a class act. His batting is elegance personified. He's a gulf ahead of any other Sussex batter in this game, as the others underperform once again.
Can we snatch 2 batting points?

Brilliant! 2 batting points and Ed needs 6 for his ton.
edit. 45 runs to avoid the follow on. Dare we dream?
Bloody brilliant! Ed gets his 100. The 50 partnership. Now just 33 runs to go.

Excellent again from the skipper, without his heroics this season I think we'd be nailed on for the drop

An excellent write-up from 'Cricinfo'. There was a fascinating social media back story going on involving Ben Brown which I didn't know about. Perhaps, a possible reason why Mark Robinson appeared upset with several of the Notts players as they came off the field for tea? www.espncricinfo.com/county-cricket-2014/content/story/749711.html

Brown's catch to dismiss Hales on Sunday looked shall we say 'inconclusive ' from where we were sitting.
I rather hope that the twitter storm over the pix of the catch was the reason for Robinson's altercation with the Notts players at the start of the tea interval. A lot of us put two and two together and possibly made five, fearing that it may have concerned sledging about Sussex match fixing. A good old fashioned row about a disputed catch is far more seemly than the unpleasant thought of Sussex players being taunted with the corruption of former team mates - although I dare say they had better get used to it because there may well be a fair amount of that when we come up against some of the feistier teams this summer.
Anyway, Hales reluctance to leave the crease on Sunday pales into insignificance alongside Hamilton-Brown's show of dissent today when given out lbw. He indicated at least twice that he had hit the ball and then for good measure walked down the wicket and showed his batting partner Nash where the ball had made contact with his bat before leaving the field with extreme reluctance. Don't know whether the umpires have reported him. But you can't do that and he will be a very lucky boy if he doesn't get slapped with a charge.

Joyce is great, he has to be the best batsman to never watch weather forecasts. Maybe the conditions don't matter to a man of his ability but what of his team-mates? To be fair, it's always a big ask to challenge a first inning whopper, whatever the conditions or pitch - just one of the reasons to bat first, to go with all the many others. Sounds like great cricket all round though. You know what BM, I've always thought Notts were one of those teams.

There have not been many finer and more elegant Sussex batsmen than Joyce. Since taking on the captaincy he has developed in leaps and bounds. His 'lead by example' some suggest is the best way to captain a side. I just wish he could inspire more Sussex batters to play as well and as consistently as him.
Today, was another example of a classic captain's innings. Not even Adams managed as many as Joyce and no doubt and hopefully there are plenty more to come. As another poster suggests, Joyce may be the primary factor this season behind Sussex remaining in division 1.

What's holding play up this morning?
Cricinfo says start delayed til 11:15, then changed to 11:30. No mention of an inspection or rain.

The highest partnership of the innings saves the follow on. Well done, Joyce for another great hundred, and well done Jonny Lew for another unexpected bonus from your signing for us. Last night it looked as if Joyce was trying to protect you from the strike, at least against Samit Patel, but you've shown yourself to be worthy of better than that.

I believe that is only the fourth century partnership this season - and it's the lack of partnerships which has been Sussex's problem in the batting , I think. We tend not to bat as a unit ; too often it has been about one batsman holding it together and nobody staying with him long enough for a match-winning partnership.
