We have a second eleven friendly against Middlesex at Radlett next week, anyone care to hazard a guess what the team will be? Given the injury situation and first eleven commitments, there will probably be no more than two or three contracted players available. With the youngsters still studying, I suspect we will see a raft of trialists named in the starting eleven

I reckon: Finch, Machan, Jackson (+), Zaidi, Beer, Piolet, Liddle, Haines, Cammish, Garton, Doram and Jenner

How about Messrs Robinson and Harrison, trialling against Surrey? Are they available?

I would rather play our own Academy prospects than other counties rejects.
George Garton has scored 738 runs. @ 31 and taken 77 wickets @ 22 in the last three seasons for Sussex in Junior cricket.

Would our academy prospects be available at this time of the year? Pretty certain we'll see at least two or three trialists involved in this game

Then yes, I'd rather us use our own players, unless of course we were trialling someone with a view to offering them a contract, rather than just to make up the numbers

Despite the sniffy comments it looks as if Ollie Robinson has done rather well for us in this www.totalcricketscorer.com/TCSLive/TCSScorecard.aspx?id=29637 Second XI match: 102 in the first innings, and bowling figures of 3-60, and 1-10 so far. Middlesex are 19-2 in the second innings, needing another 275 runs. In the first Middlesex innings the best Sussex bowler was Craig Young with 5-88. I think this is Craig Young the Irish medium pace bowler www.cricbuzz.com/profiles/6575/craig-youngRayner was Middlesex's most successful bowler in the second innings and if there is any spin in the wicket it would be good for Zaidi to fill his boots. He made and unbeaten 90 in the first innings and bowled a few overs gaining 1 wicket. If there is an injury to Nash we may need his control, as well as quicker over-rates, in the championship side sooner than expected. Even then there is a problem with opening, unless Joyce can be persuaded to go back there as he did at the start of last season.

Yes his performance in this game has been outstanding (I've seen contracts awarded for less) Zaidi too had a good game and I was pleased to see Machan opening the batting. He too, got a couple of forties. I'd like to see young Machan groomed as a future opener to challenge Nash and Wells

On that showing Ollie Robinson pushes Piolet as the utility player who bats a bit and bowls a bit. He's also seven years younger than Piolet, so has potential to develop further, whereas you'd have to assume that Piolet's talent has probably plateau-ed (if a verb can be made from that noun!)
Harry Podmore, by the way, was one of Hobden's five fast bowling cohorts on the winter PEPP coaching scheme.

Alas, it didn't quite go as planned. Middlesex got home by 3 wickets, chiefly due to a century by Dexter and a 50 from Rayner. Robinson took further wickets, as did Craig Young, but Zaidi's 20 overs 1-65 doesn't suggest he's ready for a long spell of championship bowling so far. Harry Finch, who has reportedly been working on his bowling only bowled 4 overs in the first innings of this game, and with scores of 5 and 0 it looks as if he's missed out on an early chance to impress. God dammit you really gotta grab your chances when they arrise. A couple of 40s for Machan isn't a disgrace but when you have Zaidis scoring 90s and trialists scoring tons and Tom Smiths scoring 280s, 40s don't cut it. If Nash is out and Machan got a ton, he's in. He needs to do more.

So like for like, maybe.

Of course, it's better to save your tons for the first team. Machan has shown an even better way of grabbing your chances than my way. And I'm most chuffed cos I think he's a cracking player.

Sussex start a four day friendly against Lancashire at Hove today. Expect a few trialists given our injury and fitness concerns
