With two 20 over games next week, expect T20 specialists like Liddle, Beer and Piolet to get game time, also Yardy, if he came through the Lancs game OK

But does anyone actually know why the game was called off just after lunch? The @sussexseconds twitter account has not responded to Stephen Hollis question. The Sussex website report "that the match .... finished as a draw today" seems deliberately bland. Can't see it being abandoned due to the weather? I was there on day one and the match was abandoned due to a dangerous pitch - that was the wording the officials used. It was glued together to start a new 3 day game the next day. The same pitch was used. There was still variable bounce. I suspect the glue might not have lasted three days and the pitch may have become dangerous again, especially amid rumours of someone receivng a blow to their head. eta anyone witnessing Phil Salt's first innings could see there were still concerns over the pitch after the gluing. Interestingly, that Tweet has been deleted, which suggests that perhaps Sussex did respond to Hollis.

Still there: you have to click and open the lunchtime tweet: probably answered him but not via twitter (being public). Eta Lancs changed their version from: to www.lccc.co.uk/lccc/second-xi-fixture-abandoned-poor-wicket/as I said earlier, I hope Chris Liddle is ok. Seems a sensible decision from the Umpires. Shame as neither side needed even an underprepared poor wicket for a pre-season game where the idea is to gain time in the middle, not just avoid injuries.

I believe it was due to the pitch being declared unfit. Passing reference was made to it in another match report (presumably a lancashire one) that I was reading.

This sounds truly awful.
Our poster Chris3450 was there and has written a blog about it.
He writes: "There was alternate tennis ball bounce and no bounce at all. The strip was a mosaic of large cracks and getting worse during the day according to the match officials so deemed too dangerous to play."
He also reports that the Sussex number three was playing every ball by backing away far outside the leg stump, because he didn't trust the wicket not to deliver him a mortal blow if he got in line. And after Philip Hughes, who can blame him?
Oh dear oh dear...

The report on Sussex's website news page is completely different to the one on the Lancs site with no mention of the match being abandoned yesterday just that it ended in a draw. Very 'Secret Squirrel' !! Why the mystery ? I was there on the 2nd day (or the 1st depending on how you look at it) It was still tricky as Luke Wells could testify, as he got a nasty lifting one to get caught behind. If it was abandoned yesterday as it was deemed unfit why not just say so ?!?!!? Wierd

One would hope that the radio silence is merely while Sussex conducts an internal investigation into what went so horribly wrong with the pitch preparation and that when it is concluded the club will issue a statement - if only to reassure the next side due to visit Hove that their lives will not be put at risk by another dangerous pitch!
When was the last time a county game - either first or second XI - was abandoned because the wicket was too dangerous? There was the infamous Antigua test match in 2009, of course. But that was the outfield and bowlers run-ups that were deemed dangerous, not that the wicket itself threatened life and limb. One has to go back to the Test match v England at Sabina Park in 1997-98; and that was the only time in Test match history a match has been abandoned due to a dangerous pitch, I believe.
Am genuinely shocked by this; thought Steve Hollis might have run the story in the Argus given that it is such a rare and unusual occurence. But not a word as far as I can see.

I thought I would create one thread for all second team games as we don't really need a seperate thread for every game (given the number of likely posts). Centuries for Wells and Finch, seventies for Beer and Salt. www.totalcricketscorer.com/TCSLive/TCSScorecard.aspx?id=31238Why are all the traillists and Hopkinson playing when we have Cammish, Doram, Garton, Grant, Haines, Jenner, Moses, Rawlins and Whittingham?

Thank you coverpoint, that's helpful and I have now merged the threads for previous 2nd XI games this year with this one for consistency. Keep coming up with bright ideas like that and I'll draft you into Modding and give myself a break!

Anyone any info on the game at Blackstone today? Jimmy Anyon was due to make his comeback in this but I guess it was rain effected Somerset 180-8
Play finished at ten to eight in freezing cold conditions after lengthy rain delays.
Wickets shared around the lively and effective seam attack of FHP, Piolet, Whittingham and Sakande. Jimmy Anyon bowled 3 overs which represents a step on the road to recovery - he didn't field. He is expected to have another bowl tomorrow.
Get along to glorious Blackstone to watch - it's an absolute treat.

Thanks John, I presume Jimmy will have been bowling at a reduced pace?

I am pleased to see Moses, Sakande and Whittingham playing for the seconds as a decision needs to be made at the end of the season as to whether to offer them contracts or release them. We cannot keep them on Academy Plus contracts forever. We have Cammish, Garton and Salt who should be offered Academy Plus contracts for next year. We have 7/8 new players pushing for Academy selection.

I think Garton is the best seam bowling prospect we have. Which two cohorts are you referring to?
