I'm opening up a thread for this match in the hope that some lessons will have been learned from the awful defeat at Notts. Despite Robinson's attempts to argue that the match pivoted on Wood's first innings breakaway, I'm sure all the players must feel that they let slip chances throughout the game and that despite the bowling deficiencies, it was the batting that failed twice, and not just when conditions overhead and on the pitch were at their worst. Sometimes things just happen, as Ian Botham's career proves, and they are either world-shakingly triumphant (Headingley 81), or miserably inadequate (Lord's a game earlier).
We all await the latest pronouncements from the sick ward with interest, and at least we don't have the added worry of a T20 this week that might induce sudden strains. I don't think any of us could pick a team, bowling excepted, from the current squad that, on paper at least, ought to be better equipped than the last one, and with Joyce finding form again with Ireland we should have stronger batting. Rather than dwelling on what went wrong players should be looking to ask themselves and their coaches "How can I get back to being the Nash/Wright/Wells/Cachopa/Yardy etc that scored all those runs and fielded so smartly, who took part in winning those championships and cups for Sussex and others? What did it feel like and what do I need to do differently to get back to that place?"
As to the bowlers, we know that we are now without Jordan again, and it looks as if Hobden has lost the confidence he regained in the second innings against Warwickshire. A fit Shahzad would help immeasurably, his competitive instincts stirred by the way that Magoffin has soared ahead of him in wickets taken and Robinson is treading on his heels. If no-one else is fit, are there any loans we can explore?
