Can't really blame the batsmen. We went into this game with only three bowlers, two of whom are rookies learning the game (Hobden has played 15 games and Robinson 5) plus debutant Hudson-Prentice, whom Joyce clearly doesn't trust. Result was probably foregone the minute the team sheet was handed in. We could have played Piolet and Beer or Zaidi. But I doubt they would have made much difference and nobody else is fit.

Where's the fight Sussex, a shameful capitulation against the basement boys Yes shameful. Not too surprising though given our batsmen have no idea how to play on our home ground and our attack, through bad luck mainly, seems to consist of three bowlers - and two of them are pretty inexperienced. Robbo hasn't yet managed to cure our top six of 'shell shock' it seems. I think our order is wrong. On the plus side, we can only get stronger, you'd think, and I'd rather be won three lost four than won one drawn four and lost two - relating to some earlier posts. Seems like Hants have shown it ain't all about our pitch though. Not good. Get off the golf course and in the nets Nash.

What must the 8th wicket average be against us this season. Time and again it appears 7 wickets down then a 50 or 100 run partnership. I would be very surprise if any wicket averaged higher than the 8th so far this season.

Wholesale changes are needed on and off the pitch as this shambles cannot be allowed to continue. This team lacks leadership and direction.

I think there's been real imagination as far as the recruitment of seamers is concerned, but we've been unfortunate with injuries. Let's leave the spinning issue for the moment. I'm less forgiving when it comes to the batting for I fear we've failed to nurture latent talent in recent years.
What's even more disappointing is that our batting failures have become progressive, predictable and consistent.
How can we be successful without getting some numbers on the board when we bat?

I would be very surprise if any wicket averaged higher than the 8th so far this season. For reasons of geography, it is many seasons since I last watched Sussex, and therefore I can make only tentative suggestions. At the beginning of June, Jonathan Agnew made the following comment about England, and I wonder whether the general sense of it might be applicable to Sussex: "Lower-order batsmen are much better than in the past, they are not easily intimated by short bowling. When the plan is so telegraphed, they are ready to hit the ball out of the park, which has happened so often in this series. This is a tactical issue for Bayliss and captain Cook - who must take more control of his bowlers - to address. Tailenders are at the bottom of the order because they are not as good as the men that bat ahead of them. Why bowl one way to get the best players out, then a totally different way to get the lesser batsmen out?" Add to this the limited number of experienced, quality bowlers in the attack – and, without proper spin, both a lack of variety and a skill shortage – and the position becomes comprehensible, at least from afar. But the batting is truly woeful; beyond that, words fail me.

If only we had a leg spinner in the squad to bowl at the tailenders. Give Beer a chance. And bat the batsmen in their best positions.

Beer won't play until we can find a seamer capable of batting in the top six

Not sure of 8th wicket specifically but my sums for 1st innings scores in all 7 games against us for 1st 6 wickets is 1039 and last 4 wickets 1016. Suggests we are doing a lot right in terms of getting out the supposed best batsmen but then doing something dreadfully wrong finishing off the tail - I don't know enough to suggest the reasons for why this is....

I attended yesterday and having seen us throw away a position of 202-4 - we are ridden with injuries weakening our bowling attack and collectively our batting is packed. With players scratching around for runs. To score 251 against a team who were low on confidence and wobbling had put us on the ropes. The bowling was to be expected .
Let's keep things in perspective , re group and hope we get some bikers back on the pitch. Hampshire have taken their opportunity against our threadbare attack and shot to pieces batters.
Massive match v Durham, time for the senior players to step up to the plate ....
