The reasons why Chris Gayle's remarks to reporter Mel McLaughlin were so offensive. soundcloud.com/abc_grandstand/the-press-room-scg-day-3Gayle's own comments on the controversy during the broadcast show how little he understands his own behaviour and continues to regard it as a joke. No doubt he'll carry on doing it, just as footballers will continue to take advantage of their temporary celebrity to harrass and to abuse. And a woman would never encourage a famous, wealthy sports star. Gayle's mistake was to say it on air, the pill.

No Flash, I meant footballers or just generally as that is rife. Gayle was stupid to do it on air, of course, and his response isn't too great either, but, looking at Wally's link, maybe it's okay when the shoe's on the other foot - Did Sharapova get fined?

Another comprehensive win (8 wickets, 5 overs) over Hobart Hurricanes to move Melbourne Stars up to 4th place in the table, and an emotional 51 not out from Luke Wright , who dedicated his innings to the memory of Matt Hobden. Kevin Pietersen was run out for 1.

Quite true, and an excellent Tweet by Luke Wright tells the story: Fair to say calling yes yes yes no to @kp24 wasn't great cricket last night! Hell of a stuffing! Owe you one.

The Melbourne Stars continue their winning momentum by thrashing neighbours and opponents 'Melbourne Renegades' by 8 wickets with 2 overs to spare. Luke is showing far more consistency this year and hit 37 off 26 balls and set up a platform for the star of the show, once again, KP who thrashed 67 off 43 balls whilst putting on a stand with Peter Handscombe of 93 for the third wicket. The media are drooling over Pietersen's performance as he showed off all his class and ability. One report says, "(KP) Just showed what an experienced batter can do. With nearly 90 needed from the final 10 overs, he brought all his experience into play. Waited for the freebies and ensured none of them went scot-free." Pietersen is in the form of his life after the heroics in the previous South African 'Ram Slam' tournament and may well be the hero again of the BBL5. After 6 matches the 'Melbourne Stars' lie third in the League table on 8 points after losing their first two matches. On this present form MS could sail to the Finals. www.cricbuzz.com/live-cricket-scorecard/15121/mlr-vs-mls-24th-match-big-bash-league-2015-16

Currently Luke Wright is in 5th place of the top run-scorers in the BBL with 236 runs, av 59.00. Pietersen is 12th with 172 av 43.00, 4 runs behind the serial pussyhound, who averages 29.33. Adil Rashid leads the bowlers with 12 wickets at 13.41, while David Willey is reasonably placed with 7 wickets at 26.71. All in all, good performances from the English players in the most credible of the T20 Leagues.

Fair comment although Pietersen has played one less game but still lies second behind Wright as the highest run scorer for the Melbourne Stars (MS).
My biggest concern is that if MS do reach the Finals on January 24th, then Wright has less than 10 days to rest before he jets off to the 'Pakistan Super League' and the competition start on February 4th. This second tournament ends on February 23rd, thus giving him less than 6 weeks rest before the start of the county season where Luke captains all three formats.
One only prays that: a) he doesn't get injured during his two Franchise jaunts. b) he has the energy to begin afresh with Sussex.
We saw with Ed Joyce how knackered he got after playing for Ireland over the previous Winter and how this detrimentally affected his performances for Sussex last season. For, while Wright is younger by 6.5 years, he isn't bionic!

Jesus S&F, I was gonna comment on your ten day rest remark by saying that's no problem but you seem to think six weeks isn't enough. He's only playing T20 cricket he ain't digging holes, or summin, all day long. Bionic - let's face it, most the time cricketers are either stood clapping or sat on their arses all day long. Six weeks - I'd kill for six weeks. What a life. You should be more worried during our season where he'll face ten times the workload. Six *** weeks.

Isn't it the counties that are rooted in the 19th century, rather than the ECB? I don't know much about how these overseas T20 tournaments are structured, but I do get the impression that the BBL is altogether a healthier setup than the IPL.

Fb,
It's been a series of ECB debacles that have cemented England's fate.
The Allen Stanford fiasco; Giles Clarke's fall-out with India and the IPL; the opportunities have been there. It is interesting to note listening to Radio 5 Live's interview with Stanford, that the ECB were all set to create an EPL around him back in 2008!
The ECB have used county cricket more as a scapegoat to cover over their own mistakes. The players want to get involved, Bayliss is happy to send Buttler to the IPL, but whether Strauss and Harrison can save matters is uncertain for you cannot allow the counties to hold the progress of English cricket to ransom.
Colin Graves must stand up to them and say 'be damned! An EPL is going to happen.' It may be 7 years too late and the window of opportunity has passed, but this present plastering over the cracks, appeasing every Tom, Dick and county Harry, is getting English cricket no-where and we are increasingly falling behind the rest of the world. Leaving aside the wasted financial opportunities available.
Unfortunately, I write a similar diatribe every year and nothing ever happens. But something has to give - at some point - surely?

Another cracking BBL game. Tenuous Sussex link too, with Jake Lehmann hitting the final ball for 6 to seal the win. (He played for Sussex 2nd XI last year)
