Very interesting that at the AGM both the new captain and coach admitted that standards of fitness and application had fallen in recent years. But why? Who is responsible? Board too close to management, so don't ask hard questions? Probably yes. That's an astonishing public admission, and it supports my view that the team didn't just have a bad/unlucky 2015 - the decline goes back further than that. Why on earth didn't Robinson do anything about it? Is the board too timid to put a squib up the coaches when the team is under-performing? The board seemed to have turned a blind eye, and (as many were saying in 2014 and 2015) they should have changed the coaching staff a long time ago. If they actually let Robinson decide when he was going, then that's even more feeble. Possible extract from a board memo to the CEO re coaching staff: "All hiring shall be from ex playing staff, and no-one ever gets fired. This is because they are all frightfully nice chaps, and we don't want any unhappiness in the family" On a slight change of tack: does anyone else recall the chairman as saying (words to the effect) "I don't get involved in the cricket side of things" ?

I cannot believe how such an august body of men have reneged on their stated objective in the bumpf to look for someone with a minimum of a Level 3. Actually, having written that. Yes I can. I can sense the tide turning.

I cannot believe how such an august body of men have reneged on their stated objective in the bumpf to look for someone with a minimum of a Level 3. Actually, having written that. Yes I can. I can sense the tide turning. A lot of players get level 3 before they retire, funded by the PCA. It only costs £750, requires just eight days course attendance across three modules and is completed within a matter of weeks. Are you saying that Goodwin doesn't even have ECB L3 ? If true then it's a preposterous and irresponsible appointment that ought to bring out the Union Of Professionally Qualified Cricket Coaches on strike because L 3 has some basic qualifications that he really needs in addition to cricketing skills, such as a first aid certificate and safety training. Are you certain he doesn't have it ? Because I find that quite incredible to believe. Perhaps Sussex are offering him 'on the job training'? If you are going to coach professional bastmen, I'd say ECBL4 should be the basic minimum requirement. Yes, Goodwin has lots of highly relevant experience scoring runs. But that's only part of the picture. Lots of school coaches like Alan Wells have L4 and I cannot see how it is right that Goodwin should walk into a top pro job without doing the appropriate traning.

My main point is that the new incumbent will not be available for half of the year. Who will help all the players - not just the batsmen - to hone their batting skills from September to March? Murray is his own man, make no mistake, but ....

From Steve Hollis in the Argus:
"He currently lives in Australia but is due to return to Hove at the end of the month in time for the opening Championship game against Northamptonshire on April 10."
So the new batting coach has not only missed the planning and operation of the pre-season training camp, but will miss the practice games and the MCC game, with their opportunities to study and work with players prior to the championship. In fact his appointment will be essentially reactive right from the beginning.

Spot on, HH. I could say more, but my angry delete button might not be able to take further punishment - a bit like me really.

Don't understand at all. Surely Wells, Machan etc have the ability and just need help from season pros like Wright, Joyce and Nash. The coaching is needed under this level to get batters ready for 1st team. This can be done by a very good coach with loads of 1st team experience. But no.We have no money so fly someone and his family, from Australia and rent them a house. In addition they have no coaching experience but never mind very nice guy who was a very good player for us and Wright, Davis and Greenfield are all friends with him.

It would appear that the club still holds that view, but a few of Muzza's old muckers on the staff thought it would be nice to see him again this summer so he has been offered an all-expenses-paid-vacation-and-here's-a-wad-of-spending-cash-for-your-troubles jolly. ps: can we get clarification on howard's suggestion that he doesn't even have ECB L3? If true and he's going to do the training on the job, that really is taking the piss out of the many high-calibre qualified coaches who applied for the advertied post in good faith but were rejected.

Goodwin! Amazing, where did we get that one from? Oh right, he played didn't he. Hopefully he can coach a lad to bat as well as he can bat, which is possible, so I'm happy enough to see how he does with the next band of blue-eyed boys who come waddling in on their webbed-feet (bit rich).
I too see long term, past and present, deep routed fundamental issues with our in-house structure but firmly believe the biggest problem, Robinson, has left and the future will be brighter. Need to get whacko back though in case we have to deport Cachopa mid summer.
With the old MB in mind, GOSBTS.

Zac Toumazi was not born and bred in Hove and so this insularity is difficult to follow. It's now too simple to blame Robinson as the narrow-mindedness continues.

No I blame Robinson for everything Stoner - even a dodgy curry. It's a new season though, with new people in charge, albeit old new people. Let's see what they do and how they do it.

We must all hope that the coaching reshuffle pays dividends. Do we know who is actually going to be held responsible for recruitment, selection and performance? Greenfield or Davis?

Easy solution if both Davis and Greenfield fail. They can replace each other.
