Squad announced: Briggs Brown (wkt) Garton Hatchett Joyce Machan Nash Robinson Shahzad Wells Whittingham Wright (c) If all-seam, then a good opportunity for both Garton and Whittingham to press their claims, otherwise Briggs plays and one of the youngsters misses out. Hatchett will have to take on a strong supporting role this season with Jordan's appearances intermittent and this will give him a first taste of what is required of him. Elsewhere no surprises, except that the relative positions of Wells, Joyce and Nash should give a clue to Mark Davis' expectations.

Why all Briggs and no Beer so far? Will Beer still not get a fair crack at Sussex even after the despicable one has left?

I'd like to see us turn in the sort of performance Worcestershire did against Oxford Uni last week. I watched some of it, and they played positive cricket throughout, scored big runs quickly and blew the students away to win by over 400 runs. That's setting the tone and the way I'd like to see Sussex play this season. We have the batting, not only in terms of quality, but also in the way that we bat, to score and to score quick. Then, if we can keep our bowlers on the pitch, we have enough variation to bowl most sides out twice. I will be looking at this game to see how we are going to approach things this season. Positive attacking cricket is what is called for.

Let's hope so, although the Oxford standard is far below first-class these days and Leeds actually have a few useful players, including two with distinguished siblings or parents, in Billy Root (the Brother) and Liam Watkinson (son of the famous Mike of Lancashire). Anyway, it should be interesting to watch the new Sussex attack. Will you be able to post for us on your impressions please jonboy? I can't get there today but it would be good if you could share your thoughts with us.

Nash out, Finch in and Garton over Whittingham for this game. Hope Nash isn't injured?!
Sussex win the toss and bat first, Joyce and Wells open.

If Finch makes runs and with Nash hopefully due to return for the first CC game, Cachopa may find himself not playing much red ball cricket this season.

I agree, they are probably a better attack than the Oxford Uni one, but it would be nice if one of our batsmen could impose their class

Does this match have 1st Class status? Yes. So a maiden fc 100 for Harry Finch. Whatever the standard it must be a boost for his confidence, and good for Sussex too.

"six or seven of the side will be the ones who play against Northants." Only six or seven - so that means there are four or five players not in this game who will come into the CC side. Magoffin, Nash and Taylor obviously. I guess they replace Garton, Wells and, somewhat harshly, Finch. But who else comes in - Cachopa for Machan? Unlikely. And surely not Mills for Hatchett? Or does Briggs drop out early season to make way for Cachopa as an extra batsman (Robinson does look at least one place too high at number seven).

My XI to face Northants: Wells, Joyce, Machan, Nash, Wright (c), Finch, Brown (+), Robinson, Shahzad, Briggs, Magoffin
Nash and Magoffin will definitely come in.
