We didn't draw this game because we had 5 bowlers, we drew because our middle order didn't perform well enough We drew because this is a team that has forgotten how to press home an advantage and win. Since July 2 last year when Sussex beat Middx in the T20, the first XI's record in the three senior competitions is as follows:- Played 19, Won 1. In the CC, Sussex has won once in its last 13 matches. That solitary win came in the CC at New Road v Worcs . Prior to that Sussex's last CC victory came v Warwickshire in May 2015. Winning becomes habit-forming. So does not winnning. It's in their heads with nobody standing up tall and saying 'I'll get us over the line'...

Bm,
I agree with you.
That was what Chris Adams was so good at. Winning those tightly fought periods of contest during a match and then getting the team over the line during a nail-biter. Admittedly, he had Mushy to hand.
It is the mental side that has turned Sussex into 'a mediocre side' not the quality of players. That is where Davis and Wright need to focus their primary attention.
As you so correctly say, winning becomes habit-forming - so does not winning. Sussex have forgotten how to win.

Apologies for intruding on this thread, which quite rightly is primarily intended for Sussex supporters.
From my neutral corner, far away from the action, I followed the scores and progress with interest. What a fascinating contest between two seemingly well matched sides and not totally dominated by either bat or ball. Plenty of momentum shifts and appeared to have all the hallmarks of 4 day cricket at it's absorbing best. Add in the some lovely early season sunshine and the overall ingredients perhaps provides some proof that there is still life left in County Cricket (despite what you constantly read elsewhere).
I can understand some of you being disappointed at the eventual outcome. However, put into perspective you would surely have won if Cook had not been making one of his rare outings for Essex. Strangely, some would know doubt bemoan their bad luck at having to face Cook, whereas others would delight at being able to see the England captain making a rare appearance in County Cricket.
Anyway, really hope that this has further wetted your appetite for the season ahead. Fingers crossed for a really decent summer to enjoy some cricket watching. PS. The scores would indicate an excellent deck for a early season 4 day match. Well done to your groundsmen.

I watched last day. Am I only one on here that if you were an Essex supporter you would think that if they had show just a little more urgency they should have won. Scoring at under 3 an over left hitters too much to do.

We didn't win this game because we didn't take twenty wickets!

I thought Essex should have won Fristoner and if I were an Essex fan I would have been appalled by their approach when Cook and Ryder were at the crease.

Fraudster - catches win matches. Had Cook been caught at slip we would have won with time to spare. Five bowlers can work as Leicester have shown and as Sussex showed in the first innings. Four bowlers is fine if you have someone capable of running through a side or have bowlers that aren't old or injury prone. Sadly we don't have anyone that is capable of running through a side. Flog your bowlers now and by the end of the season they will be shot. had joyce been caught in the 1st inngs instead of dropped very early on by ryder essex could have won. strange assertation quoting one drop as meaning sussex would easily win, whilst ignoring the fact the same is true for essex as we would have been into your weak fragile middle order! 2 even teams it seems

We could have had ten bowlers out there, and we wouldn't have bowled them out. It's not about numbers, it's the personnel, are they good enough to bowl sides out on a regular basis? I'm not sure they are Jonboy we would have won this game but for one crucial dropped catch. You cannot afford to drop a player of the caliber of the England captain. Five bowlers allows you to rotate more and give them shorter spells to go at them more. Four bowlers leave little leeway in the event of injury or a bowler being off form. massive assumption, what about joyce being dropped! sussex will find div 2 not as easy as some arrogant fans seem to think i reckon

I thought Essex should have won Fristoner and if I were an Essex fan I would have been appalled by their approach when Cook and Ryder were at the crease. cook was anchoring, ryder is an issue however. now no green tops his bowling is pointless, and his irresponsible batting really needs to deliver as his underacheivement of the last 2 years with the bat wont be covered by hs bowling. he must start scoring runs as hes otherwise a weak link, and providing zero value as an o/s player who should be one of the best in a side.
