We are in a strong position at tea, yum yum, so we really need to push home this advantage. No *****ing about today Luke Wells, we cannot afford it. Prove how hard you can hit that ball, or let somebody else. That's that decided then. Only who did you have in mind to come in and play the role? Will Beer. So an issue that slapped us in the face in the first innings is doing so again - it will happen all season. This has to change because as things stand we are under bowling four seamers, over bowling a spinner who we are also using to contain, seriously pressurising our batting line up with a gigantic tail and all this in Div 2 in April. I can think of several ways to fix the problem and they involve the possibility of Beer, H-P, Finch, 4 seamers or 3 seamers and Briggs. Many permutations to stop this utter waste and negativity.

Well Finch has to come in, having never deserved to be left out.

Nine down and a dozen overs still to go - looks like Essex will have to bat to tonight. Get Cook before the end of play, and Sussex might just be favourites...

Is the ball doing much? Majority lbw or bowled whereas most of the wickets Sussex took were caught!
Ridiculous collapse from a position of such strength. Going to be all out in 2 sessions!

If the wicket is misbehaving, as the commentators seem to suggest, can we trust our bowlers to take advantage of it

We need Shahzad to find his form and we'll be fine. It will be a test of Sussex's nerves as much as anything, because this is a team that has forgotten how to win. I think the record is one win in the last 19 or 20 matches across all three competitons?

We need to use our heads a bit when it's our turn to bowl If the wicket is producing inconsistent bounce, then there's no point in tearing up and banging it in. If a limited attack like Essex can skittle us out in less than two sessions, then a Mags and co should be able to win this for us. Trouble is, how many times last season, did we see our hostile attack fail to use the conditions, when other sides got plenty of assistance

A beautifully poised game and the promise of a dry and sunny final day. That's this Kent boy on the fast train to Brighton tomorrow !

Cook needs a long net to get used to the new helmet before the Tests. If he uses tomorrow as that net and bats all day, then Essex will win. If he doesn't, Sussex should record their first CC win at Hove for 11 months at a canter.

What a great game of cricket, ups and downs, highs and lows and poised for an exciting final day tomorrow in the sunshine at Hove. Cmon Sussex!

I shared an enjoyable afternoon watching the cricket with Hhs and our positive comments of a 350 lead by the end of the day were severely tainted until Shazza and Mags got together.
It's the same ol' same ol' from last season when each time Sussex are in a strong batting position their ruthlessness evades them and a batting collapse often occurs.
Never mind, we are 322 ahead thanks mainly to Nash who has contributed 211 runs to the match. Sussex still have a commanding lead and tough for Essex to traverse. Another 20 runs early on and a few quick Essex wickets and tomorrow should be an exciting day with everything to play for.
Meanwhile, the idea that promotion will be a doddle is complete nonsense. Essex fought as hard as any Division 1 team led by the Sussex nemesis 'Napier the Rapier' who doggedly battled to get his team back in the game.
All to play for tomorrow. Our quicks need to be at their best.

Well Finch has to come in, having never deserved to be left out. Disagree. We played four bowlers most of last season and ended up getting relegated. We need five bowlers as we don't have a magician leg spinner anymore.

The fact we didn't bowl them out means any move to reduce the number of bowlers to four is ludicrous. Five allows bowlers the chance to bowl short spells of high intensity bowling rather than longer spells of less intensive bowling. What happens with four bowlers if one breaks down? Unlike Essex four of our top seven don't bowl. At the end of the day it is up to the top six to get the runs and certainly it would be good if Machan, Taylor, Wells and Brown could grace us with their presence by getting their arse in gear in the second innings and do what they are paid to do which is to score some meaningful and match defining runs rather than chucking their wickets away with extremely poor shot selection. This is county cricket not village cricket Machan, Taylor, Wells and Brown! I get the impression you're a tiny bit disappointed with these guys. They failed to perform second time around too!
