Sussex can't catch a bloody cold! Not enough runs I'm afraid. Not batting out your overs is criminal really. At least we won Sunday and got the monkey off our back …. We'll be half way through the comp after today, will need to win at least 2 of the next 4 to reach the QF. Resumes end of July now so a months break from 50over cricket. Remaining Fixtures Gloucester Away Hampshire Home Somerset Away Kent Home

We were always up against it. Top 4 batters didn't score enough and we were missing Taylor. More dropped catches and some sloppy fielding in the deep. A reckless hoik from Shahzad going for a 4/6 and caught when we hadn't used all our overs.
Why did Finch bowl the last over? Jordan had another 3 to bowl.
We need to win our next 4 to have any chance of qualifying.

On paper this was the best balanced side we've put out all season. But the game was surely lost in the contrasting approaches the two teams took to the first ten overs of their respective innings.
Sussex after ten overs: 37-2.
Surrey after ten overs : 76-1. More than double.
Sometimes cricket is a very simple game. In the first power play there are just TWO boundary out-riders patrolling fine leg, deep square, deep mid-wicket long-on, long-off, deep-extra, deep point and third man.
Sure, good bowlers will have a plan to stop you hitting them over the ring into the wide open acres. But you don't have to be Gayle, Warner,Kohli or McCullum for the odds still to be heavily stacked in the batsmen's favour.
Somehow Sussex have never worked this out.
Wright needs to open, otherwise Sussex will continue to limp out of the blocks instead of racing out of them and we will continue to be 50 over whipping boys.
We had a good win on Sunday and joked about it not being a true 50 over win as the game was more T20 plus. You look back and begin to wonder if we would have won if it had been 50 overs...

What I want to know is who is the club's batting coach now Goodwin has gone home. Someone who can teach the openers how to bat without fear. Surely, not Greenfield?

Playing without fear is an approach to be adopted not a technique to be taught. But in our case it appears to be a cliche in interviews. Our performances in the power plays has been abysmal. Wright should open in this competition but that boat is probably nearer to Dieppe than Newhaven now.

I assume the club has been looking for Goodwin's successor since they first knew his stay was temporary. Announcement in due course? 2. I assume Greenfield's existing job is full time?
