"A soporific day" according to Mark Baldwin's report in The Times this morning. More positively, Archer described as having "an easy action generating sharp pace".

Far from soporific this morning: Wells and Finch raising 50 in the eighth over on a nicely paced wicket we could have used against Glamorgan last week. Sohail, Imran and Wahab providing friendly practice for Sussrex.

Are these Pakistan's front line bowlers?

Some of them. As my seat neighbour has just pointed out, no wonder they wanted Amir back. He and Yasir Shah both showed their form against Somerset. I think it will be a high scoring Test series.

In addition to my rants about Garton not playing, if there's another player in the squad who fits the criteria for inclusion in this game, as in not played lately and a regular first teamer, it's Robinson. Why no Robinson? Fuzzy logic at Sussex.
50 for Finch too.

Robinson spent most of yesterday lunch running up and down the outfield.

Robinson isn't maintaining his fitness. Whether that's because shin splints are hampering him again or just lack of discipline I don't know.

Are these Pakistan's front line bowlers? Arguably no. I would expect Mohammad Amir, Yasir Shah, Rahat Ali and one of the three seamers in this game to play in the first test. Well batted Wells and Finch. Hopefully Machan, Cachopa, Brown and Salt can get some time in the middle in the second innings.

A much better day's cricket than I had feared, though the crowd was not very much bigger than for a championship match and hardly justified the three extra catering vans dotted around the ground. Good to see some Asian support though and a few cries of Pakistan - Zindabad! to liven up the atmosphere.
Archer is a real find, a genuine, natural bowler who should be signed up and played in championship matches immediately. He runs in easily, generates pace with a powerful arm and moves the ball constantly, making the batsman play every time.
Finch took his opportunity and played a really good innings against mostly indifferent bowling, though both Imran and Wahab Riaz improved in their later spells and could have had more if Sarfraz wasn't the latest in a proud line of egocentric, rubbish Pakistan wicketkeepers. In one eventful Imran over he dropped Wells twice, with a tremendous display of acrobatic somersaulting, then ran thirty yards up to mid on to explain to Misbah, presumably why it wasn't his fault.
Wells batted very well until these late misfortunes and probably deserved the hundred he didn't get here more than the big one he got against Glamorgan, If the Glamorgan game had been played on this strip even with the bizarre bowling selection Sussex would have won.
Salt looks good until it becomes clear he is trying to hit the cover off every ball he faces, usually by driving it. If Sussex don't get a batting coach to harness his talents and teach him some new ones he will fall by the wayside. Machan was Machan and should now fall behind Finch automatically - again until a coach works with him. Cachopa has lost it completely.
An overheard - that Lewis Hatchett's season may be over. Does anyone have any insight or details?
