The reason for the pedantry in the thread title is that on Thursday night the Sussex squad will be playing at Cardiff, getting a coach home in the early hours of Friday morning. While this was commonplace many years ago with back to back championship games at opposite ends of the country it should have been an avoidable fixtures clash at the planning stage.
What sort of team are Sussex planning to put out against Pakistan? How many of the midnight motorway men will be fit and eager at 11 am on Friday morning? Or will we put out a second XI against a touring side looking to gain valuable practice ahead of the Tests and expecting some decent opposition? Tickets are being sold at an extra £2 on the gate, so the club are obviously intending to make this a premium occasion and no doubt they have arranged a lot of corporate hospitality. and are hoping to earn a lot from catering and bar sales.
If Sussex end up putting out a team filled with second-teamers and Pakistan then decide to treat it as pure practice, with more than 11 players taking part either for batting or bowling, and the match is downgraded from first-class, who will be the losers?

I would make six changes from the XI that played against Glamorgan. My XI would be Nash, Salt, Wells, Machan, Finch, Hudson-Prentice, Brown (c, wk), Beer, Garton, Hatchett and Whittingham.

The paying public? While it wouldn't be the end of the world, I'd be unhappy if I'd put aside time to watch a first-class game that counts for the records only to find that instead I was attending an oversized net session.

I'd like to see a couple of the youngsters play but putting out a team like that wouldn't help them or the tourists! I'm pretty sure the gate ticket price is higher for this game too, can't see many people paying above the odds to watch a group of kids get whipped!

What are the rules on overseas in these games, could we field a couple of overseas players to make the numbers up, and keep the fixture attractive. Are there any England players who need match practice? I don't particularly like the idea of bringing in non Sussex players, but the ECB don't seem to have a problem with it.

The Pakistan XI announced is Mohammad Hafeez, Shan Masood, Azhar Ali, Younis Khan, Misbah-ul-Haq (captain), Asad Shafiq, Sarfraz Ahmed (wicket-keeper), Wahab Riaz, Sohail Khan, Zulfiqar Babar, Imran Khan. www.pcb.com.pk/press-release-detail/pakistan-name-eleven-for-three-day-against-sussex.htmlA shame we won't see Mohammad Amir or Yasir Shah, but Mickey Arthur strikes a very positive note about expectations for the game: “We had a pretty decent outing against Somerset. I would expect everyone shall maintain and improve on standards on display at Taunton in batting, bowling and fielding. We have to keep up with the benchmarks we have achieved so far, with the same intensity. Slacking off at any point would not be acceptable”. Looking forward to hearing the Sussex squad.

Good luck to the club on getting punters through the gates given those two squads. These friendlies are bad enough as it is without star names missing on both sides.

The Sussex squad is even more inexperienced than has been conjectured: Jofra Archer Will Beer Danny Briggs Ben Brown (c/wk) Craig Cachopa Harry Finch George Garton Lewis Hatchett Fynn Hudson-Prentice Matt Machan Phil Salt Abidine Sakande Luke Wells Brown, Machan and Wells are the only regular first team players this season, and though there are strong and justified hopes for the future of a number of others this really is a Second XI team. Why bother to play touring sides if we can't put out a decent strength side to give them a properly contested practice ahead of the Test series? And why charge £2 additional admission and make Members reserve seats to see youngsters outclassed? I do think it was appalling to accept the clash of fixtures. Couldn't we have negotiated with Glamorgan to play the T20 on another day and give Pakistan the courtesy of at least 6 or 7 regular players to face them? www.sussexcricket.co.uk/news-1/preview-pakistan-continue-test-series-preparations-with-three-day-match-at-sussex

We could have used the same strip, there would have been plenty of runs left in it!
