Think at this stage I’d rather have a match winning player for the club than a very good servant of the club.
If being a very good servant of the club gets you a contract, I should have been signed up years ago!

Joe: 5-0-100-0. Good servant though.
Few years, Gillespie's balls up. They'll have to retrieve the contract from Area 51 and re-do it.

As a back-up spinner and batsman and all round trier, in all formats, we could do a lot worse than beer. He’s hardly the problem is he.

Completely agree, he’s not the whole problem but he is part of it. Because he’s a great servant to the club and, as you say, a great trier he gets the gig instead of bringing in a quality player. Add to that the fact that he’s Ben Browns best mate and hey presto! Jobs for the boys!

I should have qualified that by saying that I’ve been a Sussex CCC member for over 20 years so in that respect I’ve been a great servant to the club. Still haven’t got my cap though 😉

He is a decent player and (just about) deserves another contract imho. He is more than a ‘loyal servant’. At times he has batted and bowled very well. Even on a bad day he gives everything. Anyway, hardly a biggie in the greater scheme of things, I’m sure you’d agree. It has been plainly obvious at least two new batsmen have been needed for the past couple of years. Maybe Gillespie’s salary hoovered up the budget. hamza has done OK, but why on earth wasn’t that money spent on a batter? Perhaps that’s one for Gillespie, on Twitter

Who's this kid? Maybe he can break into the CC team too, now we're chucking yoot in. Beer must wish he was ten years younger.

Half a career missing thanks to Robinson. I spent a lot of time singing Beer's name on the old board back in the late noughties & early tenties - think Ishant X 100. He spent a lot of time taking 5fors for the 2s, scoring lower/middle order runs and wondering what he had to do back then to get a run in the firsts. Should have happened around 9/10. Which is part noughties, part tenties.
Good luck to him. Still wants to play pro it seems. Hope someone picks him up, hope they give him a Champ game, hope he gets a run and hope he takes loads of wickets and wins matches in the second innings. Not least so I can say I was right ten years later than when I was right. Because I like being right and I usually am right. Right?

I also hope that Beer gets picked up by another county and would love to see him do well. . It could be the making of him after so many years of limited opportunities. Under Gillespie he did get the odd chance to perform well with the bat when circumstances allowed him to bat in in the top order for a while. It's incredible that he has been Sussex's top T20 wicket taker, but has been so undervalued.

He single handily wrecked Beer's career.
