Good news, I think. Not a star player but a solid pro with a good record in all forms of the game, a useful man to stiffen the middle order and perhaps bowl a few overs if necessary. This is the sort of signing I envisage back in October when Davis announced he was making signings to strengthen the squad. It;s a kinfd of Tony Cottey deal for our times: someone who is quite respectable but isn't going to set the younger players back on their career path through his very eminence. www.sussexcricket.co.uk/news-1/new-signing-sussex-sign-warwickshire-batsman-laurie-evans-on-three-year-contract

Very decent player - I first saw him for Surrey seven or eight years ago.
He's left Warwicks because he wants four day cricket. He only played 2 CC matches last season but was an ever-present in both 20 and 50 overs sides.
You can understand his resentment at Warwicks regarding him as a white ball specialist becase the season before last he scored a CC double century ... against Sussex!
Makes it even less likely we will be seeing Joyce "covering" at Hove for Sussex's top seven batting now goes:
Nash Wells Machan Evans Wright Van Zyl Brown
Few opportunities there for Finch or Salt unless there are a couple of injuries to the top order.
With Robinson at eight Jordan, when available, at nine, and Jofra Archer at ten, the batting is starting to look a bit 'tasty', to use Grizzly's favourite word with Magoffin the only genuine tailender at 11.
Then there are Briggs, Garton, Whittingham and Shahzad to slot in as needed and that begins to me to look like a side that could challenge Notts, Kent and Worcs for promotion.
A promising note to end what was a rotten year for Sussex and to look forward with some optimism to 2017.

Excellent signing. I have seen him many times for Warwicks. Does not usually give his wicket away in "proper" cricket and can be very destructive in the one day stuff. Can't ever remember seeing him bowl but he is a decent fielder.

I am on side with the sentiment. Warwickshire sent us Jimmy Anyon and now Laurie Evans whom I presume is not a former crocked player which is highly positive. As for the Joyce "cover" I see this more like a flurry of snow rather than a proper snow blanket. Perhaps, we should have bets on how many days of cricket Joyce will wear a Sussex shirt next season. My £5 bet is on 6 days. Call me a cynic but it's Christmas!

A bit meh, 5 centuries in ten years suggest he probably is no better than Machan or Finch

Is Joyce going to play two matches which Sussex win inside three days, or three matches in which victory is wrapped up in two days? Anyway, I'll take your bet on: I'm going lower than six...

A bit meh, 5 centuries in ten years suggest he probably is no better than Machan or Finch 6 8 1 455 213* 65.00 2 1 5 is his record against Sussex. Nobody said he is "better" than Machan or Finch. But he is fit - which Machan isn't and there was a note of caution in Davis's last interview about the fact that Machan's operation didn't seem to have cured his problems - and he has a lot of experience in all classes of cricket.

None of this Amerenglish here, young borderman....Maths is the term we use, or better still, arithmetic.

Get a grip Borderman, Wells will be at three, Van Kolpak will be at four and what Robinson's done to get in your team I don't know. I think it's safe to assume that Philander will make the eleven - for most people.
Unimpressive record across all forms Evans. Just the sort of outside signing most people have been complaining about Sussex signing over the last few years - no better than the kids, yet he's 29. Backwards thinking I reckon and at best, meh, as mentioned. Useful for the numbers maybe but you may as well just promote Haines and Jenner. That would be even better for the numbers if my MATHS doesn't fail me.

Bm, Struggling a bit with your math there, s&f A twist of geometry. Three days and a Championship win. Three days and then a fourth day washout. Elementary calculus my dear Bm.

I think it's safe to assume that Philander will make the eleven - for most people. Obviously for the first handful of games, as a sub for Jordan while the latter is at the IPL. But Philander will then spend most of the summer with the South African touring side. It's either/or : the dates seem to preclude both ever playing in the same side together. If you say Wells will bat three, who is going to open with Nash?

It will probably be a makeshift opener, and that's likely to cause us a few problems
