That's the problem, there is no obvious candidate. It will probably be a makeshift opener, and that's likely to cause us a few problems If we're serious about getting promotion, should we call on Ed Joyce rather than a 'makeshift opener' ? Well we can't - see the clarification posted by coverpoint here unofficialsussexccc.freeforums.net/post/22904/threadHe's only available to cover for injury, for up to seven games, and if Sussex let him know a week or two in advance. Unless there is another Evans-like signing in the offing, Finch or Salt will have an extended run alongside Nash, with Wells in reserve to come back to opening if either or both fail. Watching both bat last year I like the look of Finch, and if he has the temperament to do the job he has the technical ability. With Salt it depends on what he learns over the winter. Last year he was looking to hit every ball out of the ground, and his footwork was pretty poor. If he can work on that and still retain the vigour of his driving and learn when not to use that stroke, then he could have a chance.

Not convinced by either, Finch, or Salt as championship openers. (Finch doesn't even open for the seconds) Opening the batting is a specialised position, and in Nash and Joyce, we had two of the best around. Long term, I'm optimistic young Tom Haines will make one of the places his own, but for the next couple of years, at least, we need another specialist opener. I don't really have an issue with bringing Evans on board, his stats suggest that he could do a job down the order. There was probably room for another batsman to compete in the middle order, but our number one priority, in my opinion, should have been to recruit an opening partner for Nash.

cover for injury...if Sussex let him know a week or two in advance. How does that work? Mark Davis puts in a call to Dublin saying, 'Hi Ed, we consulted Mystic Meg and she reckons one of the top six is going to do a hamstring in 14 days time'

Just goes to show what an innovative arrangement it was, as Ms Ammon Tweeeted and the Venerable Filby and retiring Toumazi applauded.

I suspect Van Zyl is Nash's opening partner after all he has opened for South Africa.

In the light of Joyce's version of his 'deal' with Sussex, I'd be surprised if we see him again. Sounds as if Davis was desperate to retain even the most tenuous link with Joyce, and Joyce may have felt he had to be polite - but he hasn't committed himself to anything whatsoever. A 'job share' it ain't.

I suspect Van Zyl is Nash's opening partner after all he has opened for South Africa. I went to see Van Zyl play in South Africa last month - only to be thwarted because it was a T20 match and for reasons that nobody could explain he wasn't in the Cobras squad. However, I asked Paul Adams and others about him and was told that after his SA experience he has turned his back on opening and now insists on batting at 3 or 4. I would predict that Wells will have to open - as he has done for most of his career - and SVZ will bat in the middle-order. And I agree with fb: I'd be astonished if we see Joyce playing for Sussex at all next season despiet all the banal twitter noise. If Joyce does appear as a kind of strolling guest it will only be because there will have been serious injuries to several players who are 100 per cent committed to the cause. In which case, one has to kind of hope we don't see him.

I think it's safe to assume that Philander will make the eleven - for most people. Obviously for the first handful of games, as a sub for Jordan while the latter is at the IPL. But Philander will then spend most of the summer with the South African touring side. It's either/or : the dates seem to preclude both ever playing in the same side together. If you say Wells will bat three, who is going to open with Nash? Well I doubt they'll let me pick the team but I'm hoping Finch.
Is that it Borderman, it was hardly worth me casting out. I suspect the carp circled the bread and thought better of it.
Jonboy, I dunno about 'specialist' openers. Joyce never opened until he was in his 30s, did he? As with much of cricket, it's all between the ears. Finch got a ton against the Pakistanis opening, that's a decent platform. Or maybe Davis was ill-informed about Joyce and there's a whoppa on the way as we speak. Would have got a Kolpak opener if he had his nut screwed on or if he wasn't deluded about Joyce, who clearly has been on the off for f****g ages.

I'm certainly not anti Finch, but it's a specialist position, and he doesn't even bat there for the seconds. He looks, a potentially decent middle order batsman, and I wouldn't want to see him ruined by a string of failures at the top of the order

Might be his only way in. I don't buy into ruining players by playing them JB. He's an adult.

See that Laurie has exteded his contract beyond 2019. Again the county has said, not for how long.

Laurie Evans playing for Surrey scored 41 yesterday, which was the second-highest score in Surrey's total of 187 against Essex.
