Numbers are such silly things: Tredwell in 4 games has taken 8 wickets for Sussex at over 50 runs apiece, seemingly far worse than those returned by Panesar when Monty was being so much reviled for "bowling like a drain" at this time a year ago, before Shooosh and the warm jets. And yet...in those 4 games Sussex have turned the tide, moving from the apathetic slide to the bottom to the first glimmers of hope, and now the likelihood of beating Warwickshire, moving into 5th place safe, except for bizarre misfortune and incompetence, from relgation and with a prospect of a strong finish to the season. Throughout this period Tredwell has bowled long containing spells, spun the ball whenever the pitch has offered anything, used his considerable experience to unsettle and deceive, and as a bonus, has batted and fielded with more than competence. How nice it would be if Tredwell were younger, born in Sussex, were on the permanent staff. Some things we can't change, but we can, and should, recognise exigency and above all, act in our own best interests. Only Robinson - and presumably Joyce, who we are told, always picks the side - know why Beer has never been given a long run, but we have to assume that it isn't going to happen for him now, not at Sussex at least. In that case we clearly do need someone with the ability to bowl dry when the wicket is unhelpful, to harry and outwit seasoned county players in critical matches and where the wicket gives some assistance, and to guarantee his place with all-round skills. Someone like Tredwell. I agree, Tredwell has brought so much to the championship side and would be as an inspired signing as Cachopa has been. Two major hurdles stand in the way though. One is, he is contracted to Kent and is due a testimonial, and two, Sussex have signed Zaidi on a two year deal. Another obstacle may be, if Prior were to lose his central contract. I'm not so negative about Will Beers future, he's still learning his trade, and although he does need to be playing games, there are plenty of examples of spinners staying put before coming good in their late twenties. Not many young English qualified spinners will offer the sort of attributes Tredwell does. Will is progressing nicely, he's by far our best one day bowler and although he may hanker over more game time, what other county could realistically offer it him? Perhaps the solution might be, a loan on a similar arrangement to the one we have with Kent for Tredwell. If, as I understand, Sussex are happy with Will's progress, then it will be up to the lad himself come the seasons end when his contract runs out. I would love him to stay, as I think his time is yet to come

Tredwell has many good qualities, but wickets on any surface seem hard to get. That to me is the game? Runs and wickets? Like many on here and watching at Horsham we would like to think Beer could be a foil at the other end, that has the potential to win games on dry turning wickets. Surely in hindsight, Beer and for Piolet would have been a better selection on this dry turning wicket? How many seamers does a man want? But Joyce has shown he is a safety first and second captain. A little imagination is sometimes needed. That's a good point, this match would have been the perfect opportunity to include Will Beer. He would have given the attack a bit more variation and offers as much with the bat as Piolet does.

Tredders now has three for seven so he must have much improved stats. He has been good for Sussex, more experience in the dressing room - I think we have lost a lot of that this year (especially with Yards being out for so long) and it showed during the bad run of results. Not many wise old heads to keep things steady.
I took too long to create this post and now Tredders has 12.4 8 7 4 and the game is won Warks all out for 99, started by CJ and finished by Tredders with a little Hatch & Nash in the middle

Is that the double over Warks this year? That's really sweet as they always seem to reserve a special drubbing for us

Unbelievable collapse by Warks - finished by losing 4 wickets in the last 6 balls!

Pleased for Robbo here as well. He's taken a bit of stick, especially regarding our winter recruitment, but his last two signings have given the squad more resolve. For a while now, my priority has been only to stay in the top division and this result, as I said, will go a long way to securing our top flight status At least if we manage to stay up, we'll have an opportunity to redress the those mistakes.

Great win by a well balanced side. Congratulations to ALL concerned : players, coaches and groundstaff. A proper game of cricket with the correct selection for the conditions. When we fire, we fire!

A memorable day where huge plaudits go to Robinson and Joyce for turning the Sussex side around. They were unrecognisable from the team 6 weeks ago burdened down by match-fixing allegations and a mental malaise that threatened possible relegation. It is amazing the emotional roller-coaster ride both Sussex players and supporters have gone through in recent seasons. And this is yet another example. Not since 1960 have Sussex beaten Warwickshire twice in a season, so finally, the jinx can be put to bed. Jordan's opening spell before lunch was the best I've seen from him this season with the cherry being Trott's wicket. His dismissal was a classic opening bowler's ball which swung in and then left him. The catch by Brown was elementary. A bad batsman would have missed the ball entirely. In fact, Chris 'BEEP BEEP' Jordan looked like the roadrunner as puffs of dust emitted from his boot heels as he ran in to bowl. He was aggressive, fiery and above all fast. Faster than in the first innings. His three opening wickets took the stuffing out of Warwickshire and paved the way for victory at 4.05pm. Another revelation was Tredwell's bowling. What an on-loan signing he has been with both ball and bat. Tredders has done everything Robinson wanted him to do and more and hopefully, he'll become a full-time Sussex player next season. A day to remember and a victory to wine and dine out on for weeks to come. www.espncricinfo.com/county-cricket-2014/content/story/763723.html

Got there at lunch and saw two hours play, 31 overs, 89 runs and seven wkts. And worth every minute of it. Watched the final Tredwell over from the railway end with s&f and it was a pleasure to share the moment with him.
Tredwell was almost unplayable this afternoon and it was nice that there were so many Kent members on the ground to see him triumph, all saying they hadn't seen him bowl like that for Kent in several years. Ever since his Sussex debut at Arundel he has bowled better and better match by match and is now back to his finest. I've seen quite a lot of Adam Riley this year and he's learning fast and has taken a few wickets in Div Two. He may well be an England prospect circa 2016. But Tredwell is a class above and on present form is the best off-spinner in England by a mile with both red ball and white ball. As s&f says, he's batted superbly well for Sussex, too.
After messing about with Kerrigan again in desperation, I now expect England to call up an in-form Tredwell for the Old Trafford and Oval Test matches. He will then play all of England's extensive white ball programme over the winter and will be the specialist spinner selected for the Test series in the West Indies in April.
The question is by then will he still be a Kent player - or will he have made his move to Sussex permanent? Personally, If I were the Kent coach, I'd keep Tredwell and send Riley out on loan as part of the younger player's learning curve. But perhaps Tredwell is fed up with Div Two cricket and fanices testing himself again in Div One - his games for Sussex have been his first at the higher level since 2010.
(By the way, where did this idea come from that Tredwell has a testimonial at Kent next season? He was only capped in 2007, amd Darren Stevens, capp[ed in 2005, is ahead of him in the queue).
Will copy the above into the Tredwell thread...
Meanwhile back to Horsham. What a shame that we probably won't be playing there next season, as from Toumasi's comments in the festival programme, Sussex seem more interested in saving a few quid by staying at Hove than the 45 pts our last two visits to Horsham have netted!

Praise where praise is due. Enough good things going on to create a cohesive team effort. Personally, I'd like to see Hobden and/or Beer playing. Obviously, The overlooked batsmen to press their claims too. With that in mind, it will be interesting to see if our experienced seconds bowling line up can polish of the younger less experienced Middlesex counterparts. Machan and Jackson with very big hundreds, have already staked a claim and Hobden grabbed a couple of wickets in the Middlesex first innings. Ironically, Brown has had better matches behind the stumps, and yet he picked up nine catches in the match. A great team effort at Horsham over the last four days and, I agree, it would be very sad if we were not to return next year

Piolet should be replaced and we will lose Jordan. This frees up two places. Three, because this was the last game we have Tredwell on loan, unless we can extend into a third month. He has become a pivotal figure in Sussex's recent LVCC success. He bowls dry from one end and even when he's not taking wkts, he creates pressure which gets wkts for the seamers at the other end. He fields second slip and holds on to almost everything that comes his way. And he's batted really well, too, with a better average than Yardy, Wells, Brown, Hamilton-Brown, Nash and Machan. As a failed county captain who would have been sacked if he hadn't resigned and as an England spinner dropped in favour of a 22 year old rookie, he's been pretty much robbed of his dignity at Kent, so it shouldn't be too hard to persuade him that Robinson's Rehabilitation Home By The Sea offers a warmer and more appreciative home.
