To be honest you didn't have to be Einstein to work out giving Liddle and Zaidi two year contracts was a bad idea. Contract negotiations involve two sides and if you offer a player a one-year deal on 35 k and they say 'I'll take a two year deal for 60k', you might consider it. I wouldn't have with those two. Then again £35k is £10K more than I would have paid either of those two players.

I think Will Gidman will be this winters big mover. Has anyone heard of anyone else likely to be on the move? I believe Leicestershire might have some problems with apparently, four players looking to leave, Cobb, Thakor, Robson and Buck. Notts are rumoured to be interested in the latter two. What of our own out of contract players, any news of them, have any of them been approached?

Leicestershire have a decent nucleus of a team in O'Brien, Robson, Smith, Cobb, Eckersley, Thakor and Buck. Robson to Notts? He has only just got in their team! A move to Northants would be a sideways move for Cobb and Buck. Thakor was rumoured to be going to Notts. Leicestershire need to keep all seven and get four quality players in the winter.
Monty is heading for the sack at Essex and so could return cut price to Northants, Graeme White and Spriegel not exactly spinning Northants to success and Middlebrook exhausted.
Rossington to stay another month so pleased with that. Northants have approached Malan (one of only four Middlesex players out of contract) and Luke Fletcher, both 28 day requests to talk lodged. Buck and Cobb are still looking to stay at Leciestershire but Northants confident they will get one. We are also in for Laurie Evans but no bites there.

I think your point is taken, cp. Shall we lay this thread to rest?

I would have expected us to have at least registered an interest. He's exactly the type of player we need in my opinion

His career was in the doldrums at Durham and has been resuscitated under his brother at Gloucester. But just as Jon Lewis left the issue is he wants more money and it is the lure of the test match grounds and better pay that causes him to want to leave..Sussex cannot compete against the big counties on pay.

I watched Gidman on TV, expecting a decent class player I was somewhat disappointed to see a bowler run in faster than he bowls and bat at 6 and get out for 0 looking very average. Am I the only one to have seen this and thought 'what's he got to offer?' I for one am glad he won't be coming to Sussex. Going to Notts, I can't see where he'll fit in the team. Looks a move for money and limited 1st team games.

I suppose we've yet to see if he can do it in the top division, but he seems a pretty decent signing to me. He, or someone similar, would go a long way towards solving our problems of balance within the side. We probably tried to do it with Zaidi, but we overestimated both his bowling and batting abilities.

He's not even on the same planet as a player. Don't be silly coverpoint. Have a think about it.

He's not even on the same planet as a player. Don't be silly coverpoint. Have a think about it. That's the official line from their coach Mick Newell. I think he can't be truly judged until he has season or two under his belt in division one cricket. He has done very well in Division 2 but will he be able to transfer this form into division one?

It's the bowling that has been the important difference year on year between the promotees and challengers in Division Two and their rivals, so I would expect Gidman's bowling to be more important to a Div 1 side than his batting. Perhaps he may score fewer runs, but if he takes 50 wickets at something less than 25 Notts will be satisfied with their deal.

I just wonder whether they are looking at Gidman to bat at 6 with a view to possibly bringing in a specialist spinner to bat at 8.
