This is where we start from, propped up by Durham's inherited debits and Leicestershire's ineptitude. One game in and the early leaders streaking clear already, and now a second of those must-win games to play. Short of a palace revolution, what do we do? Robson, if signed, must certainly play though we wouldn't expect wonders from him, just the competence that we hoped others in the top 6 would provide. Finch played a couple of almost innings, and Rawlins hung around for a while in the first innings. Could their form improve with better guidance? What about Evans and Van Zyl and Wright himself? Someone was crowing in the press about Van Zyl's runscoring in the Sunfoil cup last winter, forgetting that it was almost all down to the last three matches that produced hundreds, rather than the preceding 8 or 9 games averaging 28. I don't agree with softandfluffy that these senior signings should be dropped to the Second XI straight away: that would be an instant admission that we were foolish to sign them. That means that the younger players might have to compete for one place between them. What about brining Burgess in as batsman, perhaps even as keeper if, as someone wrote, the keeping as well as ground fielding was as poor as last season?
If Philander is out of commission so be it. Garton must come in and Brigggs or Magoffin must play and add some control.
Subject to fitness etc, maybe this team:
Nash, Robson, Finch, Van Zyl, Wright, Burgess, Brown, Weise, Archer, Briggs, Garton

magik, I like your thinking and understand what you're suggesting both as hypothesis and as prediction. I was wrong to omit Shahzad, though I agree it will take a landslide to dislodge Wiese.

If we've learnt anything from the last game it's that we must play 5 bowlers in the next. My selection would be:-
Nash Robson Wright Finch Evans Brown Wiese Archer Briggs Shahzad Garton/Whittingham

I also think that bringing in Burgess to keep wicket and allowing Brown to concentrate on his batting and captaincy would be a good thing!!! He's also not a bad batsman it seems!

A squad of 15 has been named
Archer Barton Briggs Brown Evans Finch Garton Magoffin Nash Rawlins Shahzad van Zyl Wiese Whittingham Wright
A lot will depend on the fitness of Magoffin. If he doesn't play I would expect either Whittingham or Garton to come in. My revised team would be:
Nash Finch Wright van Zyl Evans Brown Weise Archer Briggs Shahzad Magoffin ( Whittingham/Garton )

Barton, Wright, Wiese & Whittingham would miss out for me in an ideal world with Whittingham coming in for Magoffin if injured.

I'm sure he means well, but as statements of the obvious go...... It could be worse. He could have ended - we need more luck than last week.

A tough game awaits. I would bring in Magoffin for Philander. Not sure why Barton, Garton and Whittingham have been named in the squad when there is no realistic chance of them playing. Briggs will depend on the pitch. But probably won't play.

Briggs will depend on the pitch. But probably won't play. Probably as insurance in case Maggs not properly fit today. Plus the weather is forecast to be cloudy so may play an extra seamer instead of Briggs and forgo the toss?

Sussex: Nash, Finch, Rawlins, van Zyl, Evans, Wright (c), Brown (wkt), Whittingham, Barton, Magoffin, Archer #GOSBTS OMG, this game will be over before I visit on Sunday. The only good news is, we are bowling first, as the thought of that Sussex side facing the Notts attack on a first morning, doesn't bear thinking about Only four bowlers again, do we never learn lessons
