The top order failings continue to undermine us Meanwhile, Robson gets another ton for the seconds, as his "extended trial" continues. With the greatest of respect runs in the seconds counts for very little due to the vast gulf in quality. He failed to produce the goods for Leicestershire and was released because of this. I have seen it so many times that someone comes on trial, scores stacks of runs in the seconds only to then fail in the firsts. Christian Davis only last year score 258, played a couple of games for the firsts and was then released. Point taken, but then that doesn't say much for the rest of our second eleven batsmen, who cannot even make a mark at that level

I also see Burgess isn't playing for the seconds. twitter.com/SussexSeconds?ref_src=twsrc%5Egoogle%7Ctwcamp%5Eserp%7Ctwgr%5Eauthor

Wonder why Evans isn't playing He's woefully out of sorts and surely needs game time, unless the management are going to put him straight back in the Blast side I wouldn't put it past them

How can you say a player is "woefully out of sorts" when he's been injured? The last game he played for Sussex was the 50 overs match in Eastbourne in May!. He will get some time between now and the T20 and if he is fit I imagine that he will be in the side, given his form in the one day cup.

How can anyone be expected to do themselves justice with just a couple of matches to do or die? Other players (speaking about counties generally here), who are home grown academy products get years of attention and a full-time contract for a couple of years or more only to not make the grade. Look at how Northants have picked up older players who have been discarded or never even got a chance before and made a success of them.

Northants are a good example of how giving players time can be a success as Adam Rossington and Max Holden have shown with hundreds in this game. The latter in particular is a young player who would benefit from staying at Northants for at least the next 2-3 years and play regular first team cricket as opposed to returning to Middlesex seconds. The problem is that is fine with a 19/20 year old it is not ok with a 25 year old.

Match poised and pretty even at the close with Sussex in effect 55-1. We will need someone to show up with the bat tomorrow , no one from either team making a 50 yet. It could go either way but if we can get a lead of 300 I think the 2 spinners will come into their own on the forth day.

It's one of those games where you keep thinking the next session will decide the game. As joe says, it needs someone to bat well. One good innings could put us in a strong position. I thought we stuck at it well today. There were a few times when Leicestershire might have got the upper hand but we pegged them back. From square leg, Nash's dismissal looked harsh. He seemed to be nearer the bowler than the keeper when the ball hit his pads. I hope he didn't mouth off too badly as he left the field full of anger. Interesting day three to come.

Bat better second dig, considerably, and see what the spin twins are made of. A lead of around 320 plus and they ought to be winning us the game. Looks like both done alright first time round but all spinners are in the team to win games in the second innings - or should be.
Interestingly poised.

Evenly poised indeed. We need a batting hero today to step forward and amass a big score.
Meanwhile, another disappointing performance from Nash. When someone is this out of form they should be dropped and given time in the 2nds. But we know this won't happen at Sussex when it comes to senior players.
At least Nash has an opportunity to gain redemption via the T20.

Coming down the wicket to McKay with the new ball? Not only is he out of form but it sounds as if he's not over the knock to his head!

At least Nash has an opportunity to gain redemption via the T20. It won't happen because we don't have anyone to bring in. We have just the one experienced opening bat, Nash, and none of the youngsters who've been brought in have looked the part. To be fair to them, none of them are really openers anyway. In fact, we probably do have a genuine opener, and one that's in cracking form for the seconds, Robson, but don't seem to want to offer him a contract. No matter, with the Blast break coming up, Nash will probably get a reprieve

The curse of the 40s strikes again It won't be Wells, the first batsman in the match to score a fifty

Shaping up very well. A minimum of 15 overs at them before close should see us good for the win. Over to Beer and Briggs tomorrow. This is the situation I've personally been hoping for with Beer in the side for about eight years. Let's see what he can do, at last.
Hats off to all the bowlers and Van Zyl, Wright and Brown so far.
