You can have a 2nd day, but given that the WC started on 30th May and we haven't yet finished the group games, how long do you want the WC to be? In theory, having reserve days wouldn't extend the length of the tournament, because the 2nd day needn't clash with any other fixture. Are there other issues to consider? Well, that's not quite right is it? There have been games scheduled every day since 30 May (mostly 1 per day, 2 on some days) and you fail to remember that the TV coverage can't deal with extra games added in at the last moment... He who pays the piper...etc.etc.

As far as TV is concerned, they don't have to show the reserve day - there wouldn't be many of them. Maybe we're deprived of reserve days because of Sky, and not the ECB?

Not sure whether to support the Aussies as they struggle against South Africa. I guess we should take what comes.

Bloody brilliant! Jofra nailing Finch first ball - what a star! The whole of the Final is being shown live on Channel 4 on Sunday. What a day! Took me back to 2005 and that match at The Oval. The over that Roy whacked Steve Smith for 3 sixes in a row. Sweet, sweet, sweet..!

I was sitting next to two chaps in Nero's this morning who were conducting a business meeting. They broke off from their business drivel for a few moments and exchanged these words (roughly):
Man 1: It's bad planning when there are two major sporting events in the same weekend, isn't it? Man 2: Yes, it is, but I expect motor racing and tennis attract different audiences.
Hmm.

Champagne super over - England lucky to be there frankly but Stokes could have won it off the last ball - he bottled it. In fact, England have bottled the chase completely I reckon.

World champions. Feel for NZ, I think they were incredibly unlucky in what was a riveting finish in a very tense game. Quite a finish in the tennis too. Amazing day of sport.

Unbelievable advert for cricket - hope the Channel 4 audience was impressed.
Anyone think the ECB will now take 50 over cricket seriously at the domestic level?

That’s a really good point, flashblade. As far as I know, next years RLODC will play at the same time as The Hundred meaning that it will be a contest with non-T20/Hundred players, lesser county players and youngsters appearing. Perhaps, we can aim for World Hundred Champions.

A little disappointed by these viewing figures. I would have expected more, although there was major competition from the tennis and Formula 1. England’s cricket World Cup victory attracted a peak television audience of 4.5 million people on Channel 4, as the decision to show the match on free-to-air television gave Britons the opportunity to watch live international cricket for the first time in 14 years.
The British television audience for the match peaked during the crucial final super over, at which point a combined total of 8 million were watching, when those viewing on Sky’s pay-TV channels are included. Around half that number tuned in for the entire match.
However, the viewing figures were still substantially smaller than the audiences who watched England’s run to the semi-final of the women’s football World Cup and coverage of Wimbledon on the BBC, raising concerns that cricket has lost out to other sports in the decade and a half since it was last on free-to-air television.www.theguardian.com/sport/2019/jul/15/4-million-britons-watch-cricket-world-cup-final-on-free-to-airIf the ECB want cricket to survive and even grow then free-to-air is the "only" way forward.

The conspiracy theories begin. Of course, Simon Taufel is Australian, so it's no surprise the Australian cricket media are pushing this story today!! Just hope this doesn't leave a sour grapes bad taste in the mouth and why we now have to marmalise the Aussies in the Ashes. www.cricket.com.au/news/umpires-world-cup-final-ben-stokes-martin-guptill-overthrows-simon-taufel-mcc-icc/2019-07-15I can’t get excited about comments like that. I think the NZ team was enormously unlucky and didn’t deserve to lose, but Taufel’s comment assumes everything else is fixed. If we had scored 5 off that ball rather than 6, Stokes may well have attempted a different shot afterwards and hit a 4 which would have won the game - or, maybe not. You could equally dredge through all the footage and find a no ball that an umpire missed. Then, what? The bit that still surprises me is that we won effectively on boundaries scored. In the past, wickets lost have been used as a decider in the event of a tie. This seems more relevant than boundaries and a measure that everyone is aware of during the course of the game.
