Looking like Derbys will make it. Lots of criticism here about the late declaration, including from me, but I now think they got it just about right. The timing was wrong thats undeniable. Leaving it that late youve accepted your protecting the draw and the win is unlikely. Therefore just bat on and save your bowlers unnecessary overs. Going a an hour earlier yes you might have lost but you have a greater chance of winning. They seem really uncertain whether to stick or twist at the minute. Id give Archie a run as front line spinner and see how he gets on as that seems to be our clear weakness. Given how close Derbyshire got they got the declaration call right. How are Sussex going to take 20 wickets in a game this season? Surely cannot secure promotion just by drawing. The biggest disappointment for me today was Carson.

Yorkshire (h) 2021 Worcs (a) 2021 Leics (a) 2021 Middlesex (h) 2022 Glamorgan (a) 2022
Near misses include Worcs (h) 2023 and this match.
Concerning how we continually get into possible winning positions and end up either losing the match or coming close to losing it. 3 seasons of flat roads at Hove I don't think help. Onto the Yorkshire game and then the 50 over comp.

Sorry your missing my point, declaring when you cant win because of the amount of time left is utter madness you may as well bat on.

Would you rather lose and miss out on promotion? For me I cannot see Sussex winning another game this season with our bowling attack, as I cannot see us taking 20 wickets, and drawing the remaining five games is Sussex's best chance of promotion.
However, leicestershire have Worcestershire, Gloucestershire and Yorkshire at home (three winnable games). We probably need to beat leicestershire and Gloucestershire at Hove as the games at Headingly, Chester le Street and Derby look tough. I would rather be in leicestershire's position with their fixtures.

We need to win games and today we put ourself in a position where we couldnt win and thats fine if thats what they wanted but to declare when the only 2 possible results were a draw or a loss is crazy.

Had we declared earlier we would have definitely lost. We need to sign an overseas spinner for September.

As I said earlier, you need to carefully choose the games to go all out to Win. This was not one of them, and after all the criticism of declaring way too late, Sussex even then almost lost it.
We don’t have the bowling attack to achieve 20 wickets and we all know that.
Therefore, we need to wait until the back end of the season when we, hopefully, have both Ollie and Pujara back in the squad before we aim for victories. Meanwhile, draws keep us in the chase, where apart from Durham, other teams are finding it difficult to gain 16 points too.

My criticism of the declaration is that it is mental to declare when you can longer win but you can still lose.

We have a three tough away games remaining at Chester le Street, Derby and Headingley whereas leicestershire have three home games against Worcestershire, Gloucestershire and Yorkshire. Yorkshire have three home games left including two at Scarborough. For me leicestershire have the easiest run in but with three home games I wouldn't be surprised to see Yorkshire make a late bid for promotion.

I think Durham are the only second division team equipped to play in the first division next season but if I had to pick another team that might compete at that level it would be Yorkshire.

I don’t understand why you think we couldn’t have won after that declaration when we only came 2 wickets short. We only had them 8 down becasue when they had a chance to win they took the gamble. If we would have had them 70/4 at tea they would have shut up shop for 2 hours on a very flat pitch.

We definitely should have declared overnight leaving them 180. Only way to have enough time to force the win.
The only thing the Hove pitch offers on the last day is easy runs.

Thats not what i said at all, you always ride out the first hour and then see what happens. You acknowledged it was a road so acknowledge trying to bowl them out in 60 overs is and was a tough ask so why declare when you cant win?
