Why did we elect to bat first? Another poor shot from Haines.
Clark, Coles, Carter and Ibrahim looke totally out of their depth.

It'll be a 2 and a half day game which makes the 3rd innings the most important of the match, that's why we batted first. No other decision to be made.

Clark, Coles and Carter made 362 runs between them against Derbyshire so they can obviously play at this level. Today was a very different challenge though. Ibrahim also has plenty of talent too but I worry, that through lack of alternatives, he’s being overexposed at too young an age. The return of Orr and Pujara can’t come soon enough.

This was a bad day at the office. Poor decision to bat. Some poor batting by the top 6; but let's not crucify anyone yet. We were always going to have a day like today; and ever the optimist maybe we can recover tomorrow and post a reasonable score; 200 plus. Then bowl well. Is Shipley injured?

Even with that you refuse to actually listen to what I said, the 3rd innings is key in a shortened game and we have it that's the reason we bowled.

Well done Sussex for getting over 200. But now I am getting frustrated. We are bowling too many easy 4 balls. Our bowlers can't seem to bowl 6 balls on a good line and length. To make it worse a simple catch just put down at 1st slip. Ahhhhhhhhh

Did well to get to 216 from 76-6. Disappointing having done so well, Hudson-Prentice holed out when his maiden first class century was beckoning.
Being given a real lesson now by Yorkshire on how to bat. Going at almost five an over with boundaries coming easily to their two opener's.
Some really loose bowling, with five fours coming in the space of seven deliveries followed by a bad drop by Coles at first slip.
With plenty of batting to come including Malan, at this rate Yorkshire will be in excess of 100 runs ahead by close of play.
The decision to bat first in the poorest conditions of the match compounded by mediocre bowling and fielding is now looking even more questionable.
The commentator has just summed it up perfectly, "No control whatsoever from the Sussex bowlers".
With Saturday looking a total wash out, Leicestershire looking as though they will lose to Worcestershire, our best hope is to string this out long enough to enable the weather to get us a draw and hope Glamorgan get a wash out at Cheltenham.

Are you still entertaining hopes of promotion Devon? I feel we’ve had ample evidence that we’re nowhere near ready for that. We are still on an upwards trajectory though, so our day should eventually come.

Are you still entertaining hopes of promotion Devon? I feel we’ve had ample evidence that we’re nowhere near ready for that. We are still on an upwards trajectory though, so our day should eventually come. Mixed feelings SP. I like most posters on this forum want to see the team back in the first division. If it happened this season, I would be delighted, but realistically I fear given where the team is at present if we were to go up, we would come straight back down again. You are absolutely correct, we have made great strides this season. We are far more resilient and competitive and are no longer the whipping boys of the second division. However, whilst our young batters continue to progress, without an experienced head such as Pujara to bat alongside, they look more fragile and prone to poor shot selection. Carter has improved significantly this season with both bat and gloves and Tear is a more than capable deputy. Bowling wise we have a lot of work to do. We are at present heavily reliant on overseas recruitment and the whims of the ECB as to when and how we can use Robinson (and Archer if he returns to full fitness). Karvelas and Currie (when will he be given a chance?) are useful, Crocombe is the best of the young crop, but still has a long way to go before he can be considered a real wicket taking threat. Likewise, Carson is far from the finished article. Our recruitment of Wright and Lamb will improve us, but I don't believe they will run through many First Division batting line-ups. Finn is finished and Garton too injury prone. I agree our day will come and in Farbace we appear to have a better coach than we have had for quite sometime. Quality recruitment will be key to getting promotion and sustaining a place in the top tier particularly to our bowling ranks. Oh for a modern day equivalent opening attack of Steve Magoffin and Jimmy Anyon.
