Another month of the season, another *** up. The Sussex way. Worcs have been consistently strong this season and are deserving of that second promotion spot. All the best to them next season. We are not ready for Division 1, simple as that. Despite Farbrace's pre season optimism and talk of promotion and white ball trophies, I think (based on his tone in interviews) the realisation started to hit him during the One day cup that he has some very bad players here who are simply no use to us. Cannot keep flogging dead horses, hence why he spoke of needing experience a few weeks ago. Also wouldn't surprise me if the Leics match was the last we see of Pujara. With the centrally contracted England bowler who is also the stepson of the coach who will now be referred to as 'sicknote' unlikely to sign a new deal, and having seen the impact of overseas bowlers this season with McAndrew, Shipley and Unadkat, it wouldn't shock me at all if the club wanted 2 overseas bowlers throughout the season for 2024. I'd be gutted if that was the case re Pujara. A Sussex great, imperious player. The points deduction does take the pressure off us for these final 2 matches now, which is something I guess. I think ab's team is more or less what we'll see, perhaps Ward slightly further down the order to have more of a licence to play shots and attack. Least we can hope for is that they are still up for it and put in a performance. Some players are playing for their careers. Just out of interest how do you know it is unlikely that Robbo will sign? Ive seen nothing to suggest he will or wont sign a new deal. Everyone over thinks the overseas players, you fet the best 2 players you can for the longest period of time you can get them. For arguments sake Smith and Pujara are available all summer next season you'd snap them up in a heartbeat. I cant see Shipley being re-signed considering he was dropped for his last appearance. Going on the Chairmans comments last week I see it being a combo of McAndrew and Undatkat in and around Pujara who wont be playing for India. The Smith signing has cost us a shot at promotion, that's the reality that people don't want to face up to. I think we all would have backed McAndrew to get 2 wickets across the match at New Road. He is more than capable with the bat and might have got more than Smith's 30 in that game. McAndrew would probably have got 4 wickets in the match at Grace Road, and almost definitely would've made more than Smith's 3 runs. I will not go as far as saying McAndrew would've stopped Glamorgan from racking up 737 against us in Smith's final match, but he would've bowled a lot better than what some of our seamers did in that match. 1 more win plus some a few more bonus points would've put us right in the hunt for 2nd, even with the points deductions. Still a tall order granted, but we'd have at least had a chance going into these final 2 games. Re sicknote, do you not think Farbrace's comments the other week about not seeing him and not even hearing from him are slightly concerning? Surely a club with a strong relationship with the player would ensure that there is a clear line of communication regarding injuries and fitness?

It is strange Robinson didn’t rock up at Sussex to see his team mates coaching staff etc. Pope who is on a central contract has been at the Oval on a regular basis since he has been injured.

And quite a contrast with the behaviour of Jofra, who has been around and about at Hove a lot during his lengthy time out of the game.

Sussex, the bad boys of county cricket. Who’d have thought it? Pujura isn’t exactly your classic rebel.

Re Robinson. He’s been busy dumping his fiancé, playing golf with his new girlfriend and holidaying. It is possible he hasn’t been thinking about cricket much generally let alone his Sussex future, and that’s why there have been no contract developments. As for not playing in this game, you can see in pictures he has a protector thing on his finger. Yep, it hasn’t stopped him being his gf’s caddy. can’t explain that one.

So you are guessing he is unlikely to sign, that's fine I was just checking. Like I say Smith for the whole summer. I'm aware the short haul doesn't work which is entirely my point, 2 overseas players of any discipline that can play 90% of the season would be beneficial. We have 2 bowlers coming in already and batting needs depth

Daily Telegraph story about the points deduction mentions that Robinson “is understood to have signed a one year contract extension”

Totally Agree with enoughisenough. Jofra’s behaviour has been first class. Very determined to get back to playing. Very often training on his own at lunchtime. Also , as important carrying out functions for the Sussex Cricket Foundation. Where was Robinson ?? Couldn’t care if “ sick note” never plays again for Sussex.
Forum next week could be interesting. Imagine questions will be asked about Filby, Greenfield , Andrew & Farbrace. Something has to happen, as we are going backwards on and off the pitch.

Daily Telegraph story about the points deduction mentions that Robinson “is understood to have signed a one year contract extension” Full quote “In better news for the club, however, the seamer is understood to have agreed a new one-year contract at Hove.” Considering that is written by a journalist who has written extensively about Sussex in the past, that sounds pretty solid, and encouraging. (Presuming you want Robinson to stay of course….evidently some don’t!).

I would like him to stay, providing he is willing to turn out for the club several times a year, subject to whatever constraints the ECB imposes on him. The feeling has grown on this forum that he appears less committed to Sussex than, say, Jofra - those who feel that may be wrong, but there’s a perception that it may be the case.

I don’t think that perception is based on very much, and I don’t think it’s fair to use the word “willing” for Robinson, as England decides when he plays for Sussex. He has put in a lot of hard yards for Sussex over the years. Jofra is around a lot as he’s using the club facilities to get fit. whatever his feelings for Sussex, he’s not played regular cricket for a few years. Robinson has generally been on site, with England, or injured. The reality is Sussex is not a cricketing priority for either of them. Although imo it would be foolish to want either to exit the club. Ollie Robinson shows Crocombe, Hunt etc what is possible and what it takes to get there.
