Luke's maturity grows as he shuns the potential riches of the IPL next year. He wishes to start the new season for Sussex from the off. Nothing would be worse than injuring himself whilst playing in India and then returning to the county unable to play... in his 'Benefit Year'. Meanwhile, Luke is due to play alongside Kevin Pietersen for the 'Melbourne Stars' in the earlier Big Bash tournament this winter and before that featuring for Auckland Aces in “six or seven” Twenty20 matches in the Kiwi 'HRV' competition. www.theargus.co.uk/sport/11557647.Wright_to_shun_Indian_riches/?ref=ebIt's that new found maturity that makes me believe he should move up the order in the championship side. He, along with the skipper Joyce, has the resolve to grind out an innings when needed, and generally goes on to make a big hundred. Next season I'd like to see him bat at three, with Joyce in his favoured position at four. Cachopa to start at five, and plenty of options at six and seven, depending on whether Prior keeps. A good solid batting line up with left/right combinations all down the order.

jonboy,
I had A DREAM.
"If" Kent finally rescind and allow Tredwell to leave. "If" we find a worthy replacement for Jordan. "If" Matt Prior fully recovers and plays a full season for Sussex. "If" Luke Wright plays a full season and is not picked for England. "If" Ed Joyce continues his top form next season. "If" Yorkshire experience a player-drain to England... We have a realistic chance of winning the Championship next season.
Then, I woke up.

Signs on until 2018. Good stuff. Really hope we get a full season of him next year (sorry Luke, no England call ups for you I hope).

WRIGHT: Luke commits to Sussex for next four yearsGood to see Luke Wright has signed a contract extension until end of 2018 season. Provided he can escape the curse of the benefit season (Murray Goodwin in 2009, Mike Yardy's injuries and misfortunes last year) he should continue to be Sussex's most mature and prolific bastmen, Joyce excepted. And I think Sussex have done well in ensuring the succession to Joyce with this very long-term contract.

Fantastic news! Perhaps, alongside Magoffin, the most important re-signing for several years. If we are to taste trophies again, Luke will be an essential ingredient. Sussex CCC are on a roll... filled with a lot of spice, ambition and positive intent. www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/cricket/30044177How about this for a tweet: Luke Wright @lukewright204 So happy to have signed for 4 more years at @sussexccc. After this I will have had 14 year at the club and hope for many more! #GOSBTS

Is it me or are we handing out longer contracts? Great to see him sign for that long anyway, he's now one of the best batsmen in county cricket in all forms.

Absolutely agree in everything you say. Nice to see some imagination being exercised here and it deserves plenty of Sussex. I agree that Wright should be the next club captain, and perhaps this will be Joyce's final year. Meanwhile, just as the Robinson quote envisages the change helping Joyce to recharge his batteries, I think that this role plus all the demands of his benefit year will take quite a lot out of Luke. Very best of luck to him and Sussex.

Yes, this is a very positive move and one that some of us have been urging for some time. With his participation in T20 tournaments around the world, including the Big Bash, Wright knows more about how to play this form of cricket than anyone else on the Sussex playing or coaching staff and I'm confident that he will have a galvanising effect on how Sussex approach this season's T20 after a couple of poor years in the competition.

we may be looking at our next club captain.
Yep, I agree with the consensus, Chris Nash was not captain-material. At times, he seemed at a loss with his T20 tactics especially at the death. A good captain is someone whose game improves alongside his role eg. Joyce. Nash's form often suffered.
So, good luck to Luke. He can't put a foot wrong with the Club, at present. Everything is going for him. One prays his form does not suffer. A very popular choice.

Agree all round, think Luke will do very well as captain, not least because he is clearly such an all round good egg you can't see players wanting to do anything other than give their all for him. Also agree re Chris Nash, nice bloke but some of his decisions in T20 games defied logic. Think he will be quite happy to return to the ranks and hopefully rediscover his form.

A quote by Mark Robinson, in support of the England selectors looking again at Luke Wright for one day matches, from an article by Steve Hollis www.theargus.co.uk/sport/13358305.Sussex_coach_urges_England_to_take_a_look_at_his_T20_star/?ref=rss “I have been lucky in my time as Sussex coach to have worked with captains where leadership has brought the best out of them and taken their game to another level. “That was the case with Chris Adams and Mike Yardy and also with Ed Joyce and it seems to be the case with Luke as well.” And the corollary to that is that as with Adams and Yardy, there came a time when their game faltered and their successor presented himself.

It's now become a no-brainer, IMO.

Amazingly in a season in which Sussex have hardly taken any batting points, Luke Wright is only three runs behind Bairstow as Div One's leading run scorer.
I think that's a measure of how he has taken over from Ed Joyce as Sussex's rock.
Joyce's decline resembles a landslide - he is currently sitting at 76th in the Div One averages, and there are another 70 in Div Two who are also above him, so 146th in the CC averages.
Paul Farbrace told me (see, I know all the top people) that sports science shows that a batsman's eye starts to decline after the age of 34, so I guess that Ed, who will be 37 in two months time, has done better than most in that he had probably his best season ever at 35 years old in 2014.
Although I hadn't realised until I looked at the averages just now how dominant Ashwell Prince has been in Div Two this season. He's gone past 1000 and has scored 300 runs more than any other batsmen in the country in either division. And he's 38 years old!!!
