Panic over, I've just spoken with my Notts supporting friend, and he seems to think they have a verbal agreement with Leicestershire's Greg Smith Leicestershire have already lost three players as well as relasing two more and although they have promoted a Chappell from their Academy and Neil Pinner from the 2XI they cannot really afford to lose Smith to Notts and Eckersley to Essex or Middlesex. As for Niall O'Brien comment that Leicestershire need five quality players although I agree with this I cannot see them finding five quality players in one close season especially as at least one of their targets Clint McKay is being targeted by Notts. Cosgrove is another Leicestershire target.

Yes they are in a bit of a mess right now, but it's not all doom and gloom. The seconds have swept the board this year, winning all three competitions, no mean feat that. I'm surprised that they've only promoted one player from that successful group, especially as they are looking to recruit such a large number of players. Thankfully, we only need two.

Budget will be key for us here. Whilst on the subject of the playing budget, do any of you financial bods know if this budget is set annually, or could it be viewed as, say a three year playing budget? That is generally the maximum contract handed out to a player. Could a budget be set where, because circumstances dictate, we might have to go over budget this year to remain competitive on the playing front. Then with more flexibility in the contract situation, come back on budget over years two and three. There are restrictions concerning income and expenditure, set by the governing bodies, but we are unlikely to fall foul of them I would have thought.

Could Nash do the impossible and reach 1000 runs in CC this year? Be ironic if he didn't, apparently. Funny old game. Like last season, if we sort the middle bit out we'll be right up there. I'm not sure we'll sign anyone at all in the close season. We'll need to if we're to push for honours but if money's so tight, the management will probably feel safe with the squad we have. We should be stronger batting-wise next season if Prior's as keen as he sounds and our young bowlers will be better. I'm not even sure our succession plan for the seamers is tough to sort out - just replace Mags, as and when, with another OS bowler. I have a feeling we will see Jordan more next season. That said, feelings are definitely b******s.
