Thomason has played in our last two BWT Trophy matches making 30, 13, 10 and 0 (the last when he opened for the injured Haines). In addition he made 8 not out in the opening T20 match against Surrey before it was truncated for rain. In a group with four First Division Counties, another Second Division County who should be First Division, the current County Champions and three Counties with Test Match playing venues and all that brings with it, the Kent debacle aside we have beaten Hampshire and were in match winning positions after the first innings against Essex and Middlesex, all with youthful and experimental teams. Our batting weaknesses have long been an issue before this season, so whilst the final results and league standing may not be ideal, the overall position needs to be viewed in context. Well played Thomason and Haines. I just hope Phil Salt's call up will not be a repeat of Ollie's and he will at least get a game. Excuse my ignorance, it was a decent knock from him today.

James Coles comes from the Oxfordshire Academy? The team looks more like our 3rd XI. Congratulations to the lad, but it somewhat devalues the achievement, getting promoted in such circumstances. A bit like Sussex’s attitude to the competition in general, perhaps the ECB should factor that in when sanctioning the hand outs

174/2 at tea.
Haines 80* Rawlins 36*
Advantage Sussex I would think.

Well batted Tom Haines.
Absolutely delighted for him. A chance less innings and remained composed despite the exchange with Moriaty and being struck on the helmet by Overton. Not sure about the attempted reverse sweep on 95, but that is the confidence of youth I suppose.

A bit harsh with 3xi jonboy 2xi maybe.
I'm amazed surrey left out Stoneman. They still have Burns, Amla, Borthwick and Foakes. Jamie Smith is their top run scorer. Strange to bring in Plom on loan and then not play him. Also surprised Jacks didn't bowl. Well batted Tom and Delray.

Well batted Haines. Young man, chucked in a bit, written off a bit, but he looks good and compact to me. Gotta give youth a good run, not a season or two.

Yes indeed, this knock will silence his critics for a while. Not sure the bowling is up to much and it’s a typical flat Surrey track but credit where it’s due, he batted well. Also thought Thomason looked pretty solid too and Rawlins played a more mature innings.
We need to bat through the remaining 40 odd overs and post a big score because our bowling looks particularly weak.

Well done Haines. About time Rawlins got some runs. Flash in the pan or more to come? 1 question about the team. Why play Wiese? No Kolpaks next year, so he won't be coming because Sussex have van Zyl and Head. Makes a mockery of Dizzy's mantra this year? What is his real agenda here? We'll never know until the book comes out.

Wiese a replacement for Robinson, why would you not play him?! Do you know for certain Head and van Zyl coming next year? I’d argue Wiese would be a much better overseas than van Zyl as he plays all formats so better value.

Refreshing to see Sussex in the runs. Sluggish pitch, so expect Carson, Rawlins and others to play a major influence on Surrey's innings.
Sussex: 415 all out. (Haines 117, Rawlins 65, Wiese 57)

Has anyone got confirmation of who our overseas will be next season? Presumably Head is still coming despite Dizzy's departure? Given a choice between Wiese and Van Zyl, I would prefer the former. Van Zyl has been a solid signing without being a dominant force in our batting line up, whereas Wiese not only gives a better balance to the side allowing the option to play an extra batsman, but has performed far more consistently.

Was discussing this with someone the other day. Let’s say Head is one overseas, Wiese adds more than VZ as he’s an all-rounder and plays all formats, rather well in fact.
VZ though is just about the only reliable number 3 we currently have, so if we go for Wiese, we’ll need a other batsman as well, even more so with Evans gone and Wells supposedly going. That would be another 3 batsmen lost, to add to the recent losses of Burgess, Wright (to 4-day cricket), Nash and Joyce.

The Sussex bowlers are being taken to task. What on earth did Garton have for his tea? Awful bowling. Rory Burns lapping it up.

415 is beginning to look like a small total. Can we avoid another 400 stand against us?
