I wondered that, do you remember when he thought the grass was greener else where too, Im a huge admirer of Adams but he doesnt know everything about creating a winning enviornment. The environment at Surrey was positively toxic with a huge drug culture which in turn led to some horribly tragic events. I don’t think you can lay that at the door of Chris Adams though. I don’t suppose that was the intention of your comment but you may wish to confirm this to avoid any doubt. Not entirely but i am pretty certain he will himself admit he could have got to grips with that issue a lot sooner but yes im not blaming him for the ultimate sad event that would be compeltely wrong.

My understanding of the Chris Adams saga, and it has been a saga, is that he was promised by Chairman, David Green, that in recognition of all he had achieved at Sussex, he would be given an influential job at the club on retirement.
Adams has said, on record, that in hindsight he retired too soon in 2008, given he had a number of years left, but the promise of an off-field job at Sussex cemented his decision.
Then it went pear-shaped when Green became ill and stepped down from the Chair in August 2008. Richard Barrow and Jim May then stood for the position and to the surprise of many, given Barrow was deputy chairman, May was appointed due to his past banking experience.
It is my understanding that if Barrow had got the expected position, he would have stood firm with Green's promise to Adams. May did not. Not surprisingly, Adams in an upset huff, applied for and got the job at Surrey which sadly all went Pete Tong or that is the perception.
Supporters forget that Adams in 2011, helped Surrey gain promotion to Division 1 and won the 40 over Clydesdale Bank trophy. He also reinvigorated Chris Tremlett’s career. Yet, “stealing” Hamilton-Brown from Sussex and then the terrible Tom Maynard drama, followed by HB’s resignation, erased the memory of his Surrey successes.
Our former captain, then applied for a CEO job at Sussex after his five year stint at Surrey. Once more he was turned down by the Club. He has tried incredibly hard to get more involved with Sussex since 2008, but each time has been thwarted by those in positions of power, who are, in my view, concerned about his alpha male demeanour. It is down to a clash of personalities.
In hindsight, one personality helped bring incredible success to the club, and the other has brought little, but failure and disaster leading to this moment in November, 2023.
Which one would you choose?
If Green had not become ill in 2008 which led to three major operations over a ten week period, I do not believe Sussex would be in the position they find themselves in today.
Oh, for Sliding Doors.

Good interview, calm measured responses to the questions and glad hes taken responsibility and its largely an amicable move which is the polar opposite to th noise around this. Like ive said multiple times the shouting from Prior isnt helpful at all because its often without substance.
Why they havent done more interviews like this in the past 3 years ill never know.

I’m left frustrated that the questions weren’t incisive enough to get to the bottom of this. Were we really not able to offer any salary increase to Orr? If not, why not, given the savings to the player budget made this year? Is it because money has been ringfenced for new players, in which case where are we in our recruitment drive? Plus, surely a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush.
Alternatively (and I think this is more likely) did Farbrace feel that an increase wasn’t merited after an underperforming season? Was he calling the agent’s bluff in offering a 10 day window to find another county? In which case, this has badly backfired.
I do sense from the interview that Farbrace has regrets which he wouldn’t do if he’d had no room to manoeuvre in negotiations at all. I am glad at least that he’s resolved not to let it happen again.

Honest interview as always from Farbrace. Still agree with Adams Prior Wells etc that it was terrible mistake to let Orr go. I ask the question yet again. If we are debt free why couldn't we afford to give Orr a pay rise? Still waiting for a reply Andrew.

Fair to say Hughes as OS is pretty uninspiring Id imagine so, Hughes isnt a sexy name granted but his stats are good and these types of players tend to do well here. Clever signing i think but no it wont make huge news like Steve Smith

I never said we had unlimited resources but revenue from the flats, pub, ECB, membership, and players leaving should have allowed us to give Orr a payrise. Even a small debt would have been worth paying a future England player an increase. I like Farbrace and he has done a good job so far but this is a bad error by him.

Ill have a bet with you now he never plays for England, his technique was found out last year and he will need to improve quickly in my opinion. The toilet bowl is a nightmare for openers but i genuinely wish him well. I think some of the money from the flats is for stage 2 of the rebuild.

Your on. If Adams thinks Orr is good enough for England that's good enough for me. I have seen plenty of Orr in the last 3 seasons to think he has a good technique. Not the finished article but he can only get better. We will regret letting him go to Pantshire and the toilet bowel.

A future England Player thats never been in a Lions Squad or a Young Lions Squad. Dont get me wrong its a big loss but lets not over state his ability.

I would be willing to bet that Orr scores more runs for Hants than Hughes does for Sussex!
