Thank you for posting the article lab1. One paragraph sticks out like a sore thumb. His agent said, ‘If you want to build a team around him, you should pay him more money. We think he is worth more than you are offering.’ I said, ‘We’ll try our best, but we can’t get to the level you’re wanting.’ The next time we spoke to him we said that if he started the season well, we would increase his money there and then, but we didn’t have the money then. Why didn’t Sussex have the money there and then, at the most critical point of the Orr/agent conversation? Are the Club’s finances so bad that Andrew can’t even get a short-term loan from a bank? What is going on? Given how important Orr was to the future of building a strong team, you simply tell the agent that you have the money to match the increase of salary asked for and then either go out and borrow the money needed, as a short term loan, or wait until the time comes when the increased salary begins, presumably at the beginning of next season. Farbrace called Orr’s bluff and ended up with egg all over his face. No doubt part of the ego conflict between the two. Did Farbrace even make discreet enquiries first, to find out if other counties were showing interest in Orr? Surely, Hampshire would be on the radar given Ben Brown's presence. What a total cock-up. Was there any communication between Farbrace and Andrew/Jon Filby? Did they even know what was going on? Little of this makes any sense. First, Farbrace plays the victim in this fiasco, “My pride has been dented because a young player doesn’t want to work with me and doesn’t want to stay part of the team that we are trying to build…” and then makes an elementary mistake by allowing Orr to call his bluff. If Jim May had been Chairman, a former experienced and respected professional banker, this monumental cock-up might never have occurred. And as for Andrew with his eye already on the ECB job, did he even care? That is when the Chair needed to step in. Obviously, he did not. Imho, Farbrace, Andrew and Filby are all at fault here. This disastrous episode sums up the present chaos at Sussex CCC. No wonder Adams, Gould and Taylor stepped down. As a supporter, it is very sad to describe the club as a clown show, but that's what it is, right now. Spot on with the final paragraph. Every party is culpable of messing up at some point in this fiasco.

Huw Turbervills take on the Orr situation. Good read!
HUW TURBERVILL: A two-tier county system is unfolding, and players think that if they go to a county that plays at a Test ground, they could land a men's Hundred contract. It is another blow to Sussex fans, who have seen a team of stars leave.
Ali Orr's move from Sussex to Hampshire is causing a stir, but is it the cataclysmic event that is being portrayed?
Speaking as a Sussex fan, I am not sure it is as bad as losing Phil Salt to Lancashire, or Ben Brown, also to Hampshire, ahead of the 2022 season.
On the surface, it is not a surprise that Orr chose to play in the top flight of the County Championship, at a Test ground, although apparently, he was also happy to stay at Hove.
His agent is said to have encouraged him to move, though, and we have seen plenty of switches like this in recent years. A two-tier county system is clearly unfolding, and players think that if they go to a county that plays at a Test ground, they could land a men's Hundred contract too.
The promising batsman, 22, had a year to run on his deal. Although he had an injury-hit 2023, averaging just under 27 in eight County Championship matches, he topped 1,000 first-class runs in 12 games in 2022.
It is another blow to Sussex fans, who have seen practically a team of stars leave in recent years.
ormer club legends Chris Adams and Ian Gould have resigned from backroom roles, seemingly in reaction to the news.
It also comes in the week that it looks as if Sussex will be stuck – best-case scenario – in a second division of The Hundred.
From 2025, they will need to top the eight-team table, then possibly beat the bottom side in the upper division in a playoff, and then hope Hove gets the thumbs up from the ECB to play in this ‘elite' competition.
Rob Andrew, the Sussex chief executive, has balanced the books at Hove and kept the show on the road during Covid.
He is being blamed for so many players leaving, however. The list includes Luke Wells, Brown, Salt, Laurie Evans, Chris Nash, Michael Burgess, Reece Topley, Delray Rawlins, Chris Jordan and – also recently – George Garton.
Some supporters are glad that he is off to a new role at the ECB, as MD of the professional game.
Most journalists have heard stories about why some of those players left, and the handling of it all does not sound great.
With him now out of the way, or soon to be anyway, Sussex chair Jon Filby is taking some flak on X (formerly known as Twitter). This is harsh, the man is steeped in cricket in the county. Since he took on the role in April 2022 he has been a constant presence at the ground, talking to fans.
He has done his best to spruce up the historic venue. Although he probably hyperbolised when he said “Sussex cricket has never been in better shape than it is now”, he was trying to talk about the overall picture: pathways, sponsorship, women's cricket… and it is hardly a crime to be upbeat.
It is also unfair to be too critical of Paul Farbrace. Yes, it seems that he might have mishandled the Orr situation, and they had an argument at Derby in September. It was a coup signing the former England assistant coach, however, and last season's performance, in the Championship anyway, was an improvement on previous years. That there was even talk of a promotion push was a start, after years of doom and gloom.
He has been tougher on the players than his predecessor Ian Salisbury, and he has tried to inject some steel into them.
Embarrassingly that backfired when Ari Karvelas, Tom Haines and Jack Carson clashed with opponents. So balance is clearly needed.
If truth be told, Adams and Matt Prior, who snipes from the sidelines on social media, have been thwarted in their ambitions.
Adams is a good man but has struggled to land a coaching role since his difficult tenure at Surrey (2008–2013). If I am honest, I would have liked him to be given a chance at Sussex, the team that he led as captain to their first Championship in 2004, and subsequent titles in 2006 and 2007.
Sussex brought him into the tent as cricket adviser, but he wants to be the main man, and not associated with decisions that he does not agree with, and that is fair enough.
Prior also feels that he should have a role, with some suggesting he wants to be sporting director, in charge of events on and off the field. After playing he went into cycling, and such a role is common in that sport. As Sussex's most-capped England player, he played in 79 Tests, so it is understandable that he feels that he should be involved.
Orr has gone, yes, and it is a shame, but Haines, Tom Alsop and James Coles are also young batsmen of promise; Chesteshwar Pujara is expected to return, and Sussex have done good work this winter re-signing Australian seamer Nathan McAndrew, with Trinidad & Tobago quick Jayden Seales also on board for next summer.
Players come and go. What is more important is that Sussex, and other wonderful counties, are not docked from the big boys like a spaniel's tail, thanks to this Hundred reboot.

Yes we ran them really close - they were 7 down and still in arrears.if we’d won that, we had such momentum we could’ve had a dart at the championship.

Telegraph journalist, Will Macpherson, talks to Wisden about the general cricket scene. This includes a section on the Sussex CCC woes.

Very well put although there can’t be many people who need this explained by now. Yeah i thought the same, but hes very close to Matt Prior and I think a lot of Wills info comes from him which is why in my opionion a lot of it is conjecture. The thing that really p****s me off is this ridiculous NDA comments that Will Macpherson and Matt Prior keep banging on about, you dont just sign an NDA you are often financially compensated and with that you agree to sign an NDA. All NDA's can be broken without a crime committed it just leaes you open to lawsuits. If you really care that much about the greater good youd rip up your NDA.

I have no time for Matt Prior. I met him once when he was young and just about to go on an England A tour. I don’t think I’ve ever met a more big headed person. All he talked about was how he was going to dominate the world of cricket. I’m all for confidence but sometimes a little humility goes a long way. He comes across the same today, like he is the oracle.
