Sussex declare on 332-4 (Head bereft on 49*, his highest score this season!) Kent require 349 to win off around 85 overs. Surely, this has a draw written all over it, unless Jamie Atkins bowls a tour de force. edit:What a great start. Ollie,Ollie, Ollie! Live-streamlive.kentcricket.co.uk

How refreshing to follow a Sussex County Championship Match, where we have had complete control from a very early stage and haven't been over reliant on our premium opening bowler.
Does any other County currently have as large a group of young, upcoming and promising players in so many different disciplines coming through their development system as Sussex? None of these youngsters have let the side down when given their chance. No matter what the outcome of this match and even allowing for the weakened opposition, there is plenty to be enthusiastic over.
Just one thought given some recent criticism of Aaron Thomason. Yes, his batting form has dropped. However, not only did he take on the responsibility of opening the batting when others didn't, more importantly sixteen catches so far this season, only seven less than Ben Brown, some of which were far than straightforward.
In this match we have dropped five catches, three at second slip and one at short leg both positions where you would normally find Thomason. This would have accounted for two of their top three scorers in the first innings. How much closer would we have been to victory or winning this match if those catches had been held. Whilst there will always come a point where there has to be a trade off, I would just put it out there that an individuals contribution needs to be viewed in a wider context.

Or find someone who can bat and catch well.

Yep, two catches dropped this morning. It could have been a very different Kent score at lunch. A great pity. James Coles has dropped a few slip catches in recent games.
"Catches win matches" and all that.

Good display from Sussex so far - but I gather that Kent are fielding their 2nd XI . . .

Our bowling attack is toothless.
Finch looks set for hundred.

So who's going to be the first to say that we shouldn't have released Finch then.....

May as well shake hands now that Finch has got his hundred as carrying on any longer is absolutely futile with our toothless bowling attack.

Dropped catches don't help. Atkins must be being kept safe for a T20 debut on Friday, if no Mills. Robinson not his usual deadly self. It is a decent batting track by the look of it. We made this game difficult due to a poor batting total in the first innings. Loss of play also has hampered the result. A good learning curve for the youngsters, in a game where the result doesn't really mean anything. Onwards and upwards.

68 balls to take five wickets. Time for Robinson!

3 wickets in 26 balls. Time for "the real Ollie Robinson to please turn up" as Eminem would say.

Good display from Sussex so far - but I gather that Kent are fielding their 2nd XI . . . Kent started the game with 6 players playing their first game for the county (for 4 it was also their first class debut- the fifth was Harry Finch); of the other 6 players 3 were regular first team players (Kuhn, Podmore & Quinn) and 2 reserves (Gilchrist & Qadri). After day 1 Gilchrist had to be withdrawn into isolation due to a Covid contact, and was replaced by Wightman, making his county & first class debut. Only Worcestershire (in 1899) & Northants (1905) have fielded a team with more players making their first class debut! 9Glamorgan in 1921 also fielded 5). For the other 3 counties it was in their first first class match. FWIW I was very impressed with Atkins (was he injured in the second innings), Orr & Coles (as a batsman). We were glad to get a draw!

Another bore draw and we end up 16th out of 18 and in division 3 for the pointless games at the back end of the summer.
