Glad Sussex did not sign Edwards. Saw him a few times playing for Surrey 2nds's against Sussex and his temperament was decidedly dodgy ! Mate of mine at Surrey told me when we where at Purley this year that they would be well rid of him ! Had heard that Shahzad could be coming to us but of so I hope his attitude changes. He seemed to develop a huge ego after playing for England and since then seems to move around !?!?!? No doubt he has talent, maybe Robbo is the man to sort him out.

www.sussexcricket.co.uk/news-1/shahzad-ajmal-signs-three-year-deal-at-hoveSo the potential starting lineup for bowling is Magoffin, Mills, Shahzad, plus one from Hatchett/Hobden/Anyon, with Jordan to come back in at some point. The spinner position is still unresolved, so Zaidi will have to play and bat in the first 7. The hazards of that were exposed in the first half of last season when Z charged at everything on or off line and usually missed or holed out, right up until the end of the season. It also raises the question of who keeps wicket and what poisition they bat in. Robinson seems to be implying a slightly different take on things when he says "He can bowl with a yard of pace and has the potential to be a genuine bowling all-rounder." But I don't see him batting any higher than 8, any more than Jordan does. We shall see. Still, good to see we have the money for these acquisitions.

Would imagine we'd only play with four seamers if the conditions favoured seam, or CJ was available. Otherwise it would probably be three seamers with Zaidi offering spin and batting at eight. Batting wise, we probably haven't seen the best from Zaidi, so he may well give us the option of playing five bowlers at some stage.

This is potentially a championship winning XI:
Nash Wells Cachopa Joyce Wright Prior Zaidi or Tredwell Jordan Shahzad Magoffin Mills
And this second XI would beat most teams in Div Two of the LVCC,too:
Yardy Hamilton-Brown Machan Finch Brown Piolet Beer Anyon Hobden Hatchett Liddle
This is now as strong a squad as any in the country, including Yorkshire and Warwickshire. Whether it will fire in white ball cricket is another matter; but supporters will expect this squad to challenge for the championship title and coming third again will be a disappointment!
Are we now going to renew the pressure on Kent to release Tredwell (if he still wants to leave - he has said nothing since he announced at the end of the season that he had some "big decisions" to make) ?
We've got Shahzad with a year to go on his contract and Kent signed Denly with a year to go on his,so contracts now seem to mean as little in cricket as they do in football. If JT wants a tilt at winning the championship next season rather than playing second XI or, at best, foot of Div Two for Kent, he should be given the opportunity.

Abdur Rahman joins Somerset as overseas player for next season after a successful, if eventful, first spell at the county.

How have Lancashire let spinner Callum Parkinson slip through their fingers? While Lancashire may have four spinners on the staff (Kerrigan, Parry, Lilley and Parkinson's twin brother Matthew) i believe he was one of two players out of the eight that I suggested should be in their Academy with the potential to make the step up to the professional staff within the next twelve months. The left arm spinner was Lancashire Under 17 top wicket taker last season with 36 wickets @ 15 with a best of 5-11 and scored 410 runs @ 34 with a best of 123. Josh Bohannon with 1,075 runs @ 77 and a best of 213 was their other star performer for the Under 17s. Chris Laker, Hannah Jones and Nalisha Patel are the three others who should be added to their Academy squad for next season alongside current Academy players Harry Dearden, James Drummond and Emma Lamb. Recent Academy Players Haseeb Hamed, Saqib Mahmood and Matthew Parkinson's recently signed their first professional contracts. I would offer Rob Jones a scholarship contract. derbyshirecricket.blogspot.co.uk/2014/11/something-for-weekend.html?m=1www.derbyshireccc.mobi/?ref=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.google.co.uk%2F&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.derbyshireccc.com%2Fdccc%2Fcricket%2Facademy-players

Azeem Rafiq could be the next to come through the door at Hove. The Yorkshire forum reckon he will sign for us next week. Thats a no to Tredwell then?

Azeem Rafiq could be the next to come through the door at Hove. The Yorkshire forum reckon he will sign for us next week. Thats a no to Tredwell then? Well, one of them thinks so, based on the fact that Azeem has retweeted both the moves of Ajmal Shahzad and Tymal Mills to Sussex on his Twitter page. Mind you he is following 290 people, so it is also possible he's moving to Northants, or going into selling Asian clothes wholesale, according to some of his other tweets. I wondered about him at the start of last season, based on the idea of Robinson nurturing a young cricketer who couldn't quite find his place, a la Jordan (and now Mills and Shahzad), but then I saw him bowl at Arundel and it was clear that he had lost his action completely. Yorkshire supporters sitting nearby confirmed that he'd had a prolonged case of the yips, possibly affected trying too hard to get a winning Twenty20action, and completely losing the plot. If he has recovered and can get back to hus U19 form - but without the propensity to be foulmouthed about his coach on Twitter that he showed then - he could be valuable. If.......

“ I’m not really seeing it as a trial. Because I’ve worked with the coaches [at Sussex] before and they’ve been really good – from the word go, really – and they’ve offered me the chance to go down there, to help me get back to my best and we’ll take it from there. No promises or anything like that, it’s about me going out there, enjoying myself, getting back to being myself and enjoying my cricket.” Whatever he says, it sounds like that's exactly what he is doing in the indoor nets at Hove this week - having a trial. Good luck to him.

I would have thought we'd possibly keep our options open until June, when Mags becomes UK qualified
