Are we certain that Magoffin's UK qualification will apply immediately from June, and not from Jan 1 the following year?
In other words, what I'm asking is do the qualification rules - which have grown increasingly complex over recent years - permit a player to change his status mid-season?

Nick Compton has left Somerset by mutual agreement. Destination?

Unhappy Compton leaves Somerset as widely predicted, particularly in recent weeks. Unfortunately Somerset have lost almost all their opening options in the last year or so: Arul Suppiah retired first, then Chris Jones gave up the game, and it seems that Alviro Petersen will not return. That leaves Trescothick (39 on Christmas Day) and not much back-up. Compton wants to return to London and lives in SW London, and might do worse than going back to Middlesex, who could certainly use him with Rogers very likely to tour next year and Robson possibly caught up in representative cricket as well. If Luke Wells had not signed a new contract Compton could certainly have done a very good job for Sussex.

Somerset have certainly lost a lot of opening batsmen in the last couple of years what with Petersen not returning, Compton going to Middlesex, Arul Suppiah retiring and Chris Jones packing up cricket. As things stand their top five is likely to be Marcus Trescothick, Johann Myburgh, James Hildreth, Craig Kieswetter and Peter Trego with two youngsters in Tom Abell and Alex Barrow at six and seven.

I believe they've been toying with idea of promoting Trego. I know he's done it in the white ball stuff, but championship cricket is a bit different. Trego and Trescothick has a nice ring to it though, it might just work.

Trego and Trescothick sounds rather like a verse from Widdecombe Fair, doesn't it?

Although Somerset have 23 players this includes four spinners in Rehman, Dockrell, Leach and Waller.
Their only batting options are Trescothick, Myburgh, Hildreth, Abell, Barrow, Rouse and Wyatt-Haines. Rouse and Wyatt-Haines only joined the staff this season. Rouse scored a double hundred and a hundred for the Under 17s in 2014. In 57 matches for Somerset he averages 27 with the bat and 24 with the ball although he hasn't bowled in last five matches for Somerset and averages less than one wicket per game. Wyatt-Haines had a poor 2014 but in 2013 scored 730 runs @ 46 in all competitions with a best of 116* for Devon ironically against Somerset.
Keeping wise their options are Kieswetter, Regan and Barrow (if required).
Seam bowling wise they have Thomas, Trego, Groenewald, Gregory, Meschede, C Overton, J Overton, Davey, Dibble and Sale, third new addition to the squad from the Academy.

I saw Abell in the final match at Headingley and was most impressed. However I think they look very short of batting and their bowling may struggle to take 20 wickets consistently. Therefore I think they will compete with Hants and Worcester for the two relegation spots.

I can't believe Robinson still thinks we need another seamer! We already have Magoffin, Jordan, Anyon, Shahzad, Mills, Hatchett, Hobden, Piolet, Liddle, Hudson-Prentice and Finch. There is also George Garton who has scored 738 runs. @ 31 and taken 77 wickets @ 22 in the last three seasons. We already have more seam bowling options than the current County Champions Yorkshire.

Does he though? I too, feel that we probably have enough seamers to start the season, and although we should plan to be without Chris Jordan, we might see more of him than we think. Given decent luck with injuries, we should be OK in the championship, although we have less options in the one day stuff. I wouldn't imagine Magoffin, Mills or Anyon will play much white ball cricket. We'd be better seeing how it goes, then, if we did find we were short, bring in an OS when Mags qualifies. The end of next season may see a few departures so we can reassess things then. Hopefully George Garton will continue to make progress and could be considered for a place in the squad.
