I thought for a moment that Lancs must have cocked it up and announced they had signed Chanderpaul senior when they actually meant his 20 year old son, who also plays for Guyana. Shiv must be in his mid-forties. But then I loooked up Guyana's recent games and saw the old man has scored three centuries in his last three innings ! He will be 43 this summer and counting first-class, one dayers and T20, has passed 40, 000 runs. Trescothick, who still needs a few hundred more, and is 18 months younger, is the only other batsman with a similar mixture of experience and achievement.

Another, more obscure South African joining English cricket. Daryn Smit is to play for Derbyshire this season as a non-overseas player. He is "A batsman capable of keeping wicket and bowling legspin", which gives him a few strings to his bow, though his first class record in 11 seasons - he is 33 - is less than outstanding. www.espncricinfo.com/county-cricket-2017/content/story/1086668.html

He did play a couple of games for Derby 2's and hit an unbeaten 200 so guess they signed him on that basis.

Durham have lost Stoneman, Borthwick, Coughlin, Jennings and now Onions! Sir Ian will have a busy winter trying to recruit with nothing in the coffers. Jennings hasn't gone anywhere .....yet! However, in the form he's been in this season, Durham will miss him more as a bowler. As for Onions, he has only played 7 championship matches this season due to recurring back problems and whilst he has taken 27 wickets at 23, the Sussex batsmen took a liking to him at Chester-le-Street, taking him for 88 off 18 overs. Will be interesting to see where he goes.

We should approach Yorks and offer them Wright, for Lyth. Identify, approach and eliminate. That's what I was taught in cubs and I'm pretty sure it would work here. Seriously, identify.
