I hope you made it in time to see them BM, both out within first five overs. The good news is that Hobden took five wickets Oh for f***s sake. One of them didn't happen to crack a ton in that first five overs did they? No need for an answer. No need for a report either BM. Although one man got a ton and one five wickets so...

So Zaidi and Hobden push for a place for the firsts. Machan's form seems to have nosedived

Jonboy - I wouldn't read too much into that. Zaidi may have scored 100 for the seconds but hardldy troubled the scorers in the firsts. As has been alluded to on RHB thread the wicket is very batsman friendly (once in). As for Machan form is temporary, class is permanent. Pleased to see Hobden take five wickets.

Jonboy, yet again you dive in. Zaidi, has no runs full stop in the first team! No need to even consider him after 1 score in the 2nds. More concern was why is Beer batting so low and only bowling 10 overs in the 1st innings? Is he acting on orders? And so many seamers?
Why oh why is he not batting 4 or 5 and bowling? He should be told to as surely he must be in the frame?
The thought process of the coaching staff seems on a par with England football & cricket. The only systems in the world no one else follows! Negative and uninspiring!

Negative and uninspiring! Beer is batting so low because Machan, Finch, Zaidi and Jackson are better batsmen. As for the bowling I am not sure why we played so many seamers. I am disappointed by the performances of Grant and Moses who Ihaven't kick on so far this season. Where were Shoare, Hudson-Prentice and Hooper?

SSX II - Wells, Machan, Cachopa, Finch, Jackson(w), Hudson-Prentice, Beer(c), Cammish, Liddle, Hobden, Moses
Nine homegrown players wonders will never cease! Sussex win by 49 runs against a much more experienced Essex lineup.

Where's zaidi?
Surely they can't be thinking of playing him in the 1st team after 1 innings on a shirt front? I saw from twitter Beer got the middle order out, lead from the front it would seem? But Hobden, a little more control in the next few days and I'd plunge him in. Pace like that is a winner.

He's playing today. A few others too that I thought would be rested. Good to see. Would like to see Nash and RHB having a go,

Any of our regular correspondents watch the first day's play against Essex and can comment? It doesn't look as if any of our young hopefuls found any form. Scorecard

Sussex facing defeat in this game The day finished at Southend with the visitors just 60 ahead and only two wickets left. Another century for young Cachopa but, alas, more failures from Machan and Finch. A mention for Zaidi too, he just missed out on a hundred and took 4 wickets when Essex batted, as did Will Beer.

And Piolet, lets not forget him.
The coaching staff must get onto these boys they have to be 1st team aware. Not sulking because they're in the 2nd team. Runs and wickets. Zaidi could be in the frame as a batter? More deserving than Machan and/or Finch in the 4 day side.
