Having just come away from witnessing every ball at Trent Bridge l think some context is necessary. It was an excellent effort in the first innings to limit them to 240. Putting to one side OR’s contribution for a moment, players who are more likely to be involved with the ball going forward, like Sean Hunt, Currie & Karvelas clearly have something worth persisting with. James Coles bowled tidily in the 2nd innings & little Archie is becoming a very gritty player. Batting against the Notts attack was always going to be tough given that 2 of what has been a settled top 5 in Haines & Alsop were missing. Sadly this task was made more difficult by the fairly random calling of no balls by umpires Bainton & Baldwin (are there 2 worse). In fairness this was one of the few games this year where we haven’t got batting points due to the excellent work Grant Flower has clearly done with Orr, Clark, Haines, Alsop, Carter & Archie Lenham. What the club needs in the winter is another clearout of deadwood & rebuild, Mills, Wright, Crocombe, Atkins & our disinterested rounders ‘captain’ Bopara (couldn’t even remember his team changes in a SKY interview before the televised T20 game v Gloucestershire). We have some good players (those mentioned above plus FHP, Carson, Garton etc plus a useful old head like Finn). Let’s also remember the almost unbelievable bad luck with injuries ! Remember too that we have had to go outside & get 6 yes 6 bowlers from other sauces - Burrows, Beard, Crane, Brooks, Currie & Karvelas. The future can be brighter!!

And Stewart. Seven bowlers, and except the last two they all played at different times didn't they? If at all. What does that tell you? Instead of wasting money on five poor loans & two trialists to all come in and do an ordinary job at best one after the other why didn't we just get an OS bowler once Robinson went down? I think it was Phil who suggested Ishant earlier. He's been available, he's been at Sussex, he's been very successful at both Sussex and for India in England.
Context not really needed here, we all say pretty much what you just said. You sound familiar Graham, first post is it?

First proper post. Yes missed Stewart ! This season does feel like the season that might have been. Not sure many counties would have coped with all the injuries.

Wake up call for Sussex. Not all doom and gloom though. As I have said before, the management needs to make sure that the mindset of the young pros is good. There was plenty of good experience to take on board. Looking forward to playing Notts in 3 years time. On a specific note, I thought the umpires Bainton and Baldwin were awful. No Sussex bias here. These two need to go back to umpire school.

Some of the players Graham wants to get rid of are at the moment required. What is wrong is the management. Who would select Bopara as captain? No other team had that means plenty of coaches knew he wasn't a captain. So what made Kirtley think that he was? For some of those mentioned, I say again, they have no grounding in T20. They need it to understand the basics of how T20 is played. Finn, old head, maybe but, passed it (Knee injured, long term). Grabbed a big payday, another meaker without the fitness? You want good people within the dressing room to encourage the youth. I don't see (or have heard) that Finn does this. Management/coaches the root cause. Too many over rated youth players. Coles, what's he done, really to play, 1st team CC? Lenham, hasn't got a wicket since? (Leics away?) Carson, injured all year? What's the problem Salisbury? Tell us! Beer, released. Oh, how we could do with him now? Finally, every team gets injuries, some get test match ODI T20 call ups on top. (Sussex don't)

‘Grandavefan’ Beer had been at the club without pulling up any trees in Championship or 50 over cricket. Who exactly do you suggest playing other than ‘overrated youth players’ when our career administrator & non cricket person Rob Andrew keeps all the money for the rounders team?? He along with Mr Greenfield needs to go so that perhaps guys like Adams Prior or Gould could be involved with running the club !!

Damn straight on that last sentence.
I think once we knew Carson was down we definitely should have given Beer the whole season, which would have been a first. He's actually got a pursuable FC bowling record and we know he bats decent at 8. It would have been a very sensible move given Lenham's age. Very sensible.
Sponge, unless Andrew is gone our best young players will be playing for Notts when we play them in 3 years' time.
We desperately need change at the top.

When researching the booklet about the Members Revolution in 1997, I spoke with Peter Moores. About 30 minutes long, towards the end of our chat, I asked him whether he would ever like to return to Sussex as a Coach. After he reminisced about “the many happy memories at Hove” he dropped a bombshell. “I would love to end my coaching career back at Sussex. It would be the perfect symmetry for me.” The gulf between Notts and our club this week made the Grand Canyon appear like a ditch. Desperate times breed desperate dreams.

Oh, it’s not on jest. Not this time Philis. Sometimes the funnies have to take a backseat to seriosity, which is definitely a word. I think everyone would be on board if we had Adams as DOC & Moores or Flower as coach/coaches. Those three leading the way would do me but even that would struggle with Andrew & his direction. A CEO or whatever they call themselves with different priorities is vital for anyone to thrive I reckon.

Andrew and greenfield get rid of both, get flower onto the management of the team with Adams as we are team without a plan on all forms of the game.

This may have already been commented on here, but I just belatedly read in The Times (from during the Notts game) that Sussex have used 26 players in red ball cricket this season. Unbelievable! How can those making decisions on the team have any credibility?

Maybe our result at Trent Bridge wasn't so bad after all. Notts took 11.5 overs to pass Somerset's total of 119 all out in 35 overs at Taunton today with all ten wickets in hand.
