Well, it certainly wouldn’t do the club any harm to win a few games of cricket early in the season. It’s been a while after all and getting a few wins would generate the kind of buzz that’s sorely needed. No guarantee of winning even with Smith. Someone gets left out. Bad for squad ethics and trying to build this. Bad for finances. 4 game mercenary with his own agenda. Smith doesn't give a sh*te about Sussex. This stinks. Last years T20 squad was a mercenary shambles. Please let's not go down this route with the red ball.

I’m 50/50 on the Smith signing, can see both points of view. And I also think Archer will play in the IPL , but it’s a bit of fun to think of an opening match line up of: Orr Haines Smith Pujara Alsop (wk) Clark Garton FHP Robinson Carson Archer

Even if Smith does well and we score 600 we won't win unless we take 20 wickets! I am not convinced our current bowling attack is strong enough. Therefore I would rather have an overseas seamer who could hopefully replciate that Magoffin did than sign Smith for four games. Who are you going to drop Clark / Carter? The latter averaged 42 in the county championship last season. Personally I would drop Clark rather than Carter as Clark finished last season with 60 runs @ 10 in the last 3 games whereas Carter scored 55 in his last first class innings. I am not convinced we will see Archer or Robinson in a Sussex shirt next season as England rarely release their seam bowlers now. The batting is not the problem as the below statistics show:
Sussex batting averages Player Mat Inns NO Runs HS Ave BF SR 100 50 0 4s 6s CA Pujara 8 13 3 1094 231 109.40 1820 60.10 5 0 0 135 7 TJ Haines 12 21 2 941 243 49.52 1504 62.56 3 3 2 129 0 AGH Orr 12 23 1 1047 198 47.59 1900 55.10 3 3 2 125 21 TP Alsop 13 24 2 930 150 42.27 1723 53.97 4 4 3 115 2 OJ Carter 9 15 0 629 185 41.93 1158 54.31 1 5 1 73 8 TGR Clark 13 24 1 765 138 33.26 1620 47.22 2 4 1 95 3

Allegedly in talks with Sean Abbott.
Don't know if it will come to anything.

Allegedly in talks with Sean Abbott. Don't know if it will come to anything. That would be a useful signing if he’s available all season all formats.

There really aren’t enough good batters Sponge! We have no competition for places whatsoever Agreed non of our batters can compete with Smith. But we do not need a 4 match superstar. I think there is good healthy competition amongst our batters in the squad. I would love to see Smith churn out some runs for Sussex, but it just doesn't feel right bearing in mind where Sussex are with their long term plan.Or has this been binned? We need a good overseas bowler for the season; Smith can go and get his practice for a big Div 1 Club. Is there good competition though? Orr, Haines, Alsop, Pujara, Clark.....then who? Rawlins as our only cover?

So our number five and six spots in the order the competition is between Clark, Carter, Ward and Coles…. We could defo do with one more experienced bat (not that we are going to get it)

Yes fair enough, I had Coles down as an all-rounder, but he can be considered a batsman, Ward has been used as a T20 specialist almost, but assuming he's on a full contract then he comes into contention. Carter is an interesting one - if he's competing for the number 5 spot (and he's certainly good enough), does that mean Tear keeping? (Ah, I think I know the answer to this - you have Alsop keeping in your 11.)
