No hint at there being more signings to come and no money for an overseas in the 50 over cup. I’ve got a feeling this is it folks. If this is really it that’s a truly shocking winter of recruitment. Farby must be absolutely fuming. |

It's amazing how quick panic can set in. I think Farby was very honest in saying he is targetting the CC above all else. There was no mention of no further signings at all.
No harm to Joe as he was just saying he thought that was it but its amazing how 1 post can lead to accusations again of mis management when its more likely than not further signings are happening.

I’ve heard Hughes will be captain when he turns up. Not ideal having a captain for half a year and one who’s never played in county champs before. Not a big fan of shared captaincy, it’s disruptive. I’d be happier to have Simpson as club captain because he’s playing all formats including the 50 over cup. Perhaps it was a sweetener to get Hughes to come over?

Yeah the captaincy is very odd, im assuming hes going to be Blast skipper as well.
You can only assume Simpson didnt want the captaincy.
I cant see Farbrace allowing Orr to leave a year early if he wasnt certain of a replacement.

If that’s the case then it’s poor recruitment. 35yo Simpson - the signing is fine, the uber-long contract is not. He won’t believe his luck. also it remains to be seen if Carter sticks around in light of Simpson’s arrival. And a non-wicket taking allrounder who has been passed around the counties. We already have a decent batting allrounder, so the Lamb signing makes even less sense. As for overseas signings, it’s similar quality to recent years. And we are losing some players, and never got Wright. This is a far cry from Farbrace said he was hoping for in the Summer. Since then he has talked about tight budgets a lot - I would say we haven’t used our money very wisely at all. Orr being allowed to leave is a good example. The existing squad won’t be competitive imo, not least as a few other counties will be stronger in 2024 having recruited aggressively. Still, no captain yet so maybe a Chris Adams-style signing is on the horizon. We will need it. Congrats to Coles and Carson on their call-ups. Coles has the potential to play test cricket. Credit to the club for signing him up long term. I agree with you that 3 year contracts for Simpson and Lamb is bad business. There is a tendency to play these players when they might not deserve it. Simpson hopefully will bring something to the Club; not so sure about Lamb. |

I guess Farbrace has to do the best with the resource he has regarding Captaincy. Can't be any worse than Pujara, can he? Why not Simpson? |

That would make very little sense to me. Why add extra pressure to someone who will have just jetted in and is acclimatising to English cricket conditions and a set of teammates he hasn’t met before? It’s not even as if he has a great deal of captaincy experience. It would also mean more chopping and changing, halfway through the season and likely again the following year. Also, if this is the plan, why not include the info in the announcement of his signing? Simpson is the screamingly obvious choice and if he doesn’t want the job, let Alsop have it. |

Very strange appointing Hughes as capt for what is really the second half of the season.
Especially as Paul F clearly said in the forum in September , that he wanted one captain across all 3 formats!!
Looks like we a back to having 3 captains. Unbelievable.

Unless Hughes is going to be a multi year overseas captain it seems effing pointless making him captain for 7 games.
You then look further into it and think who is going to do it first 7 games, Alsop persumably? at least he'll probably do it fo the One Day Cup

It is possible this is another disastrous off season for Sussex with no plan.
It is also possible that Farbrace has a new signing/captain up his sleeve, and that’s why no captain has been appointed yet.
Neither outcome would be a surprise.
The fact that Farbrace hasn’t walked out, gives me hope he has a trump card to play.

The person that told me would definitely know is all i can really say. The initial profits from the flats go phase 2 and 3 of the project. To be fair no one has said that we arent signing any more players the only thing mentioned was Farbrace saying budget is priority for the County Championship and apart form a comment at a lunch weve had no official confirmation on the captaincy. |
