After my negative posts about Sussex CCC's chances for this season in all formats of the game, like everyone else, I am amazed and
delighted by the sudden transformation seen to date.
Why has this occurred?
1/ The suffocating pall of failure emanating over the club from Rob Andrew’s self-destructive influence has gone. It feels like a strait-jacket
has been lifted from the players and Hove ground.
2/ Paul Farbrace’s long years of England experience + his wide knowledge of cricketers has led to a series of shrewd signings both county
and internationally. Simpson, Hughes, McAndrew, Lamb etc.. being excellent examples.
3/ Now Archer has returned to the England fold, this has allowed Robinson to grace more of his time.
4/ Only the best of the youngsters are now playing for the A team and look how few there are, compared to Andrew’s folly. Finally, we
have that balance in the side.
5/ Mentally, we have a team that can recover from tough positions (yesterday, for example), which we have not seen for quite some years.
This has led to a winning mindset and momentum, again, not experienced also for a long time.
6/ A change of captaincy has greatly helped. The good riddance of Ravi Bopara, perhaps, one of the worst captains of a Sussex side I can
remember, has led to the surprise of Tymal Mills’ winning leadership, followed by his own rise of consistent physical fitness. It is wonderful
to see him not breaking down after seven matches alongside his mature bowling at vital moments of a T20 game.
Meanwhile, the captaincy of Simpson is inspired. Like all top leaders, his own game has not only improved, but his experience and 'wise head'
reading of a game has been great to see. His performance yesterday, for example, to steady the ship, reminded one of the Chris Adams' hey-day
when he and Goodwin came together to turn a losing position into a winning one.
Perhaps, I am poking the goat and like a wisp of smoke, all this positive sentiment will disappear as the pressure mounts to win a trophy or gain
Division 1 prestige. That is always the BIG test of a growing side.
For now let us enjoy the ride. I had forgotten how exciting it all is.
