Well done Hudson-Prentice. The less said about the rest the better.

This one-day cup campaign could be hard going. We will get a clearer idea which of the young players are up to it though. They are learning on the job and a few egos could get bruised along the way. No bad thing. We will also miss the experience of Danny Lamb. Can’t be any harder than last year when we only won one game (I hope!). There’s a divide between those teams playing their strongest available lineups, targeting to win the competition and others treating it largely as development for young players. That could lead to some very one sided games. Aren’t we playing our strongest team AND treating it as development!? The difference between this season and last is expectation. Nothing much is expected of this Sussex one day cup team. We will probably see today play out again - batsmen throwing their lot at not getting out, at the expense of scoring. And bowlers offering two gimmes every over. If one or two rise to the surface then it will have been worthwhile imo, given how well the other competitions are going.

I am not sure we are playing our strongest avaliable eleven Yike, otherwise Carson and Hunt would have started. Although, neither would have addressed the poor batting display. Given this competition is very much something or nothing, squads are decimated due to The Hundred, some Counties recruit overseas others don't, the very real challenge of attaining a top three finish in just eight matches and how well the squad have performed in the Championship and T20 I can't get that disappointed in how the results unfold. As others have said, the real interest is how the fringe players perform and hopefully demonstrate they are ready to step up should the need arise. We have only played one game and it is a small sample size, but already some would appear to be some distance from the first team. A good day for Hudson-Prentice and whilst others may not agree I thought Crocombe looked good. Quick, threatening and not offering up regular boundary balls as have been a regular feature of his game in previous seasons. Foreman also bowled very tidily. Lenham a little unlucky, but not a great day for Karvelas, Haines (never looked comfortable), Clark, Carter, Ibrahim and Rogers. Some may feel that a little harsh, but this competition is their window (Haines aside) to demonstrate they can challenge for first team cricket. I suspect contract extensions under Farbrace will not be so readily handed out, which is another reason why they need to take the opportunity the 50 over cup is providing them.

I agree with all of this except Carson not being able to add something with the bat. I was looking for at least one of the fringe players to really show theyre ready and hopefully they will. Id like to see Rogers higher than 7 so hes given a proper opportubity, Clark has had plenty and hasnt delivered.

Id like to see Rogers higher than 7 so hes given a proper opportubity, Clark has had plenty and hasnt delivered. Just for clarity Realab, I wasn't criticising Carson's batting ability, which has improved considerably over the last season or so. The simple fact is in that line up, he would probably bat no higher than eight. He would have come in with only 120 odd on the board in the 32nd over on a wicket where 300 is probably par, with six wickets down and not a lot of batting to come. Our goose was already cooked, even if he got 50 the game was gone, they would have just had a few more to knock off. Thus my view he wouldn't have been in a position to address the poor batting that had gone before. His primary role is still as front line spinner. Hudson-Prentice aside, the batters didn't deliver in terms of runs scored and strike rate. It further illustrates the apparent gap between those playing yesterday and Alsop, Pujara, Coles, Hughes, Haines and Simpson. As you say, hopefully some will step up over the remaining games. Carter has had a tough season, but I still feel he will come through it.

Carson replaces Foreman against Warwickshire, let’s hope this helps. We really need Haines to hit top form.

Another battering on the way. A fair few young Sussex players have gone backwards in the past few years.

Rogers could gently tap his way to a half century here. There’s no pressure on him to achieve any more than that. Edit: Maybe not. He’s all but run out of partners

But I share your disappointment today after such a promising start. We all know it’s been a great season in T20 and championship . It’s a given. Every poster knows it and regularly writes it, including myself. not in doubt. Even so , some of the young/fringe players are being shown up. They are seeing why they are in the 2s. some will knuckle down in light of this , some will fade away. This one-day cup has been a leveller so far. No bad thing. Very Disappointing though. hopefully the bowlers do themselves credit.

15 overs left on the field, not going to win anything doing that.

The bigger disappointment is the failure from the senior players.

On the wrong side of a hard fought battle. Got a lot closer than I thought we would.
