Finch certainly living up to JF's description of him as "obdurate": 56 dot balls in his 65 ball inning so far. But he's doing a job; he and Machan are building the platform from which Sussex should be able to set Durham a second innings target that will be beyond their reach. Agreed, and Machan is growing in stature with each innings this season: good to see someone finally making the breakthrough from the "promising" phase.

Well I think this is still too close to call and this afternoon should decide it one way or the other.
Wish I was actually there watching as it appears to be a fantastic game of cricket.

I agree with both statements. What do we think would be a winning score? 300 at least, maybe 320 as the wicket is still giving batsmen a chance whilst producing the occasional shooter? Sussex have the better of the two attacks, I think, but it is prone to leak runs thgrough excessive enthusiasm and 20 or 30 wides and no balls might sink an otherwise winnable cause.

Totally engrossing, and I make this the 8th vital session. They didn't want to be chasing more than 250, and we wanted to set them at least 350 My guess is somewhere in the middle, but I wouldn't put my mortgage on it

Probably the next 19 overs will decide it. After that the nasty hard ball is due. May be Wright/Shahzad/Robinson should just go for it and aim to score another 100 before the second new ball. No reason why they can't do it; we've been scoring at almost five and a half an over in the 14 overs since Finch was out. Hope Finch selflessly 'taking one for his side' is recognised. When it comes to contract discussions the tendency is that what will be remembered about this match will be scores of 11 and 22 , rather than that he batted for nearly an a hour and a half so that others could wait for the ball to go soft... But he certainly batted to order. JF said they wanted Wright in after 45 overs, and Finch obligingly got out in over 47!

Ironically, Peter Moores, that renowned stats man, seems to ignore them when it comes to selecting his old favourites for England.

Meanwhile, all these batsmen getting out to that soft old ball means it's down to Ollie and Hobbers again, now.
Does this mean changing the batting order is deemed to have been a success or failure? Not sure, really...
on edit: hh beat me to it on the old ball. As said yesterday, not much gets past him (except when he's batting or fielding!)
on edit again: Oh, it wasn't hh. It was Steve. Sorry!

Well that's the answer: 261 will have to be enough. Maybe there is some deterioration in the pitch now, which should work to our advantage. If they are 4 down by close of play it should be our game.

Good time for Robinson and Hobden to break a record that was set in 2015 by Robinson and Hobden.

Doesn't seem like enough. I think there's still 58 overs in the day, so they should be around the 200 mark by stumps, which means a minimum of six down by close, I'd say. Let's hope there is genuine deterioration in the pitch and that's why Sussex collapsed against the soft old ball!

If the pitch is deteriorating then all well & good, if not then it will need a pretty tight bowling performance to do this & I guess they are slight favourites.

I thought the target we set Worcestershire wasn't enough, but we won (relatively) comfortably in the end. 261 is enough to mean that it will be tough going if they lose two or three wickets close together at some stage. And, the pattern of this match is that wickets fall in batches. We will see.

Finch didn't get many runs. But he did bat 21 overs against the hard ball. Once the ball went soft, Machan, Brown, Shahzad, Wright, Maggofin and Hobden all went in the space of 13 overs.
Finch : job done.
Numbers 6-11: job not done.
