All seeming very easy for Durham with the newer ball!! It's definitely a wicket where batting against an old ball is harder now!

Well 19 in and we've got rid of one. There's still plenty of time to get the rest, come on Sussex!

I've been out for the day but been following the score on an i-phone. One presumes it's day over for bad light? Anyone there to confirm? Another fantastic innings from Machan. If only Luke could have scored a few more and got over 50. As ever, yet another crucial first session tomorrow morning. A couple of quick wickets and it's game on. What another great match. We've been truly spoilt this season and this is only the third Championship game! www.espncricinfo.com/county-championship-div1-2015/engine/match/804173.html

Play abandoned for the day in a hail storm.
BBC weather forecast for tomorrow is a clear morning and rain from 1pm, but stopping by 4pm. So it may be just one session to score 147 or take 8 wkts - or there could be a final tense mini-session at 5pm after the ground has been mopped up and with all results still possible.

It could be a thrilling finish.
In a post-match interview Chris Rushworth says: "There's a bit of variable bounce but it's a good pitch and the scores are about par. It's been a remarkable game and one of the coldest I've played in."
So, all it needs is for snow to stop play tomorrow and this game has experienced pretty much everything!

On the train home after three compelling days.
All was going pretty much to plan at 255-6 and then I can only presume Rushworth and Hastings got reverse swing to deal hammer blows to Wright, Shahzad, Mags and Hobden each of whom seemed to get an absolute beauty. Those two Durham bowlers especially bowled with huge stamina and great skill to sustain their effort in the freezing conditions for so long.
Obviously we are not out of it but I agree with the analysts who were hoping for 300-320. I guess too that the weather can also play a major part.
Hobden and Shahzad have been the pick of the bowlers in the second innings to date. Quite what Matt has to do to take a wicket I have no idea.

Seriously, I have to agree with you; from what you say about the excellence of his bowling, match figures of 0-108 from 23 overs sounds like a very unjust reward. But among the Durham bowlers neither Rushworth nor Hastings is noted for reversing it; to get it to reverse requires a bit more pace than conventional swing (and probably warmer conditions, too). When Rushworth was dropped (or "rested") in 2013 and Wood - currently in the Carib with England - got his big chance , Collingwood gave Wood's superior ability to reverse it as the reason for prefering him. Who knows? I'm sticking to the hope that Sussex losing six wkts to an old and soft ball in 13 overs was down to pitch deterioration, and clutching at the prospect of something similar happening to the Durham batting on the final day ! Tomorrow is all about the weather, I think. If the Met Office radar tells Durham they've only got the morning session to go for it at five an over, Sussex could pick up early wkts and be in with a fighting chance.

Durham on top for me - they ain't Worcs. 88-1, 88-0, 55-0 and 80-0 seem like weird numbers for this harder ball talk. But then the last wicket, or so, partnerships... Seems to me that aggressive batting is the key, against any ball - a proper gun-slingers affair. Good stuff, win lose or draw. Not sure I agree that our attack is stronger than Durham's. Two top sides either way.

Forecast has now changed again and is for light rain showers from 11 am and continuing all day, so it sounds as if they may be on and off - which hopefully disrupts the batting side's rhythm and keeps the Sussex bowlers fresh!!!

Forecast has now changed again and is for light rain showers from 11 am and continuing all day, so it sounds as if they may be on and off - which hopefully disrupts the batting side's rhythm and keeps the Sussex bowlers fresh!!! From the cricinfo review www.espncricinfo.com/county-cricket-2015/content/story/867881.html of yesterday's play " With plenty of overs left to play, the weather and not the players will decide whether Division One still has a side that has won all of their games this season." I also like the comment by Rushworth that "..i f you hang around there and be patient, rewards will either come at the other end or later on in the day". Whilst he was speaking specifically about Durham's bowling ethos I think that could equally apply to Sussex. Once again, a pitch with something for everyone, something to find out batsman who are not fully in form or a little over-confident, but also to reward those prepared to be positive, and to give the bowlers something to strive towards. If there are long periods between the showers then either Durham may hit our boldly and coast it, or Sussex may find the key to unlock first one wicket, then two or three. Either way, further positives to be taken from this game are the arrival of Robinson, the continued strengths of Shahzad and Machan, and the stoical support of Finch. I'd like to side with Jon Filby and borderman and see Hobden get his just desserts, but my instincts tell me that Magoffin would be the most likely bowler to make a breakthrough in these conditions. Looking around elsewhere, Notts will be lucky to find enough play at Southampton to force a win over Hampshire, and at Headingley Warwickshire will have to time their declaration against Yorkshire very finely and hope that the weather holds for them to complete the job. That game could go any way, like ours against Durham. By tonight the worst case for Sussex is to be second to Yorkshire by 3 points, with Durham 5 points behind and a game in hand. The best scenario would have Sussex top by 21 points over Yorkshire.

I can't help thinking we've probably under performed a little in comparison to our opponents, and that's probably why they would be slight favourites at this point. Batting wise, we've been indebted to Robinson, Machan, and not forgetting Hobden. A little bit extra from some of the senior players could have made all the difference. As for the bowling, it does sound as if young Hobden has again bowled impressively without much luck. I would have hoped that Magoffin could do for us, what Rushworth did for them, and of course he still might. I agree, he still represents our best hope of turning this around. As a footnote, brilliant news that Yardy was able to have a net session yesterday. Whenever he's absent with an unspecified illness, most of us fear the worst, so it's heartening to see that he seems to be getting over whatever the problem was.

BTW, was his current illness 'unspecified'?

I'd take a day of rain, to be honest. Great news about Moo. I hope the players can all gee him up. I sometimes think he just needs someone to tell him often what a good player he really is, because I don't think he believes it himself. He's such a humble person which probably is a hindrance it the top level.
