Joyce is currently 229 not out for Ireland - 50 runs more than the entire ruddy Sussex team managed at Trent Bridge. I'm not knocking Joyce at all. Admirable man, always gives his all whatever shirt he's wearing. But how does such moonlighting fit with being county captain? Should the club consider making Wright captain of the four day side as well as the one day side? Yes - especially as Ed has hinted that his playing days might come to an end in the next couple of years. I'm guessing that he wouldn't have an ego problem if he played as a specialist batsman under Luke's captaincy. This would also give Luke the chance to learn from Ed.

The commentators were saying that the conditions were much much easier for batting during the last session As tomorrow's forecast looks good, we should have the best of the conditions for batting. This, and a weakened, relatively inexperienced Notts attack, should allow us to see what the Sussex batting can really do. If we fail again, I fear we'll need to make big changes.

If Hales and Taylor had rattled up 200 or more over the two innings the expected defeat would have been more palatable but they have scored just 16. Disappointing.

To the Sussex top seven if you don't start scoring runs it will be a case of do you want fries with that as their cricket career will be toast!

As hhs clearly showed with his excellent stats what Sussex lack are strong partnerships - a problem which has become worse in recent seasons - for, at present, Sussex are relying more on miracles to compete.
The Robinson and Hobden record-breaking innings kept us in the game against Durham which we then went and lost. The dramatic Jordan 56* against Warwickshire won us a match where we were dead and buried. The two wins against Hampshire and Worcestershire were more evenly balanced between the batting and bowling but the sides are deemed as two of the weakest in the division. And once more, we rely on one batsman to get a decent score eg. Wells v Warwickshire.
It appears the Sussex bowling is our strength and the batting is now letting us down.
Cricket is a fickle thing and you can't blame batsmen for being out of form - that is the nature of the game. But what concerns me is where is that experienced, strong and psychologically intelligent batting coach to help our senior players out of their doldrums?
Once more we are "behind the game" at Notts after allowing a strong position to run away from us. And given the conditions, even though the weather suggests they should improve, if Sussex are left to get 300 or more in their second innings, I know where the astute money will go.
It is up to the senior batsmen to come to the fore and with no Joyce to dig us out of a hole like last season, sadly, we are lacking that thrust. To ask Nash or Wright to find us a 100 each in the second innings is asking a lot, but it is at these times, when a top top batting coach earns his money and no-one knows if Sussex even have one. That can't be right for a division 1 side hoping to compete for the Championship trophy this season.

Quote;
"I am a purist. I don't really know what to make of it all, the way they bat and stuff." (England bowling coach Ottis Gibson on New Zealand's ODI approach to Test matches)
Blimey, that's not very reassuring, is it?
In this context, does 'purist' mean old fashioned and out of date?

Polished off the tail in double quick time. Excellent. Now I feel we need to aim to bat for 100 overs. If we can do that, the victory will follow.

Here we go. Three down in the first seven overs.
Counting Notts last three, that's six wkts have fallen in ten overs this morning.
I thought somebody said conditions were going to be easier for batting today???
33 wkts so far in six and a half sessions of play. If this was Hove everybody would be blaming grounders and demanding points deductions for a poor pitch. But Trent Bridge is a Test ground, so that's different,eh?
(on edit: sorry , howard - you beat me to it!)

Patel and Wood managed to get hundreds on the same pitch. Could it just be poor batting?
Nash and Wright need to steady the ship now.

So 5 gone in 17 overs. Must be a Somme style minefield out there.

66 for 5
Assuming all the batsmen are doing their best (and that's a reasonable assumption), I'm inclining to the view that we have become a very mediocre team.
