Opening a thread for this match. We said that the previous game against Warwicks at Hove was a must-win, and with Jordan's heroics we got there at the eleventh hour. This is one we would hope to stamp ourselves on from the very beginning of the game, to show dominance in batting, penetration and fulfilment in bowling. If we don't have Shahzad then Hobden, Robinson and Magoffin must be the strike force and either Dockrell or Zaidi have to bowl 20 overs and take wickets. In batting we needs Wells to show that he can play two long innings in succession, for Machan and Cachopa to transfer their T20 skills to the long form with added caution, and for Joyce to recapture his old skills.

Well, a win in the T20 against Gloucestershire, and that will be three wins in a row, which should at least lift the mood amongst the supporters. For most of us though, the championship is the overriding concern and, like others, I agree, these next few games are likely to seal our fate. Those last three games look particularly daunting. More immediately, the Edgbaston game will present a challenge as we've now lost Tim Linley, who did a very good job at Arundel. Will Robbo be successful in finding a new ball partner for Steve Magoffin? Our hopes of another unlikely win probably rest on him being able to do so. If we want to start picking up wins, or at least racking up enough runs to get us a few batting bonus points, then we need to sort out the batting order. For me, that starts at the top of the order, as that sets the tone for what follows. I'm not convinced by Wells and Yardy opening, one of them probably has to, but both would be better down the order at six. Making the reverse journey, should be Nash, we don't have another right hander who can bat at the top of the order, so he has to return as opener, maybe allowing Chopper to return at five? I suppose the other big choice is, assuming we are successful at recruiting a seamer before the weekend, who takes the fourth bowling slot? Dockrell had a bit of a mare against Durham, but he knows Edgbaston. Also, would it be fair to leave him out following a bad performance in one game? If he doesn't play, it would seem to be a straight choice between, another seamer, probably Hobden, or maybe bringing in a fit again Zaidi, who would at least lengthen the batting.

In terms of team changes hopefully Robinson and Hobden will be fit and I would also give Beer a game.

The challenge for Robinson is to translate momentum from a couple of good T20 wins into a better four day performance, rather than hide behind the excuse one hears from so many coaches of how hard it is for players to switch between different formats.
Very pertinent issue, because today Kent, after storming to the top of the T20 table and scoring white ball runs for fun, capitulated in five spineless red ball sessions to Northants, batting just 36 and 38 overs in their two innings for their third careless consecutive CC defeat since the T20 comp started.
How the same players can be so table-topingly good in one format and so abject and marooned in 18th place in another is a puzzle many Kent supporters are trying to fathom tonight!

The Warwickshire squad is
Varun Chopra (Captain) Tim Ambrose (Wicket Keeper) Rikki Clarke Laurie Evans Oliver Hannon-Dalby Ateeq Javid Tom Milnes Jeetan Patel William Porterfield Josh Poysden Boyd Rankin Jonathan Trott Ian Westwood Chris Wright
Still waiting for a Sussex announcement - if Zaidi is fit his Second XI batting performances in the week plus occasional spin bowling could be balanced against Burgoyne's 10 wicket performance but less impressive batsmen. Then again, second team performances don't necessarily translate into the ability to bowl long probing spells against mature, seasoned First Division batsmen. I would still like to see us play a spinnner though, with the ground getting drier and batsmen used to dodging early-season shooters and lifters perhaps unaware that other modes of bowling exist. I'm sure Patel will have a lot to do with the outcome of the match and I'd hope we could balance that.
Meanwhile T20 heroics should lift the spirits and perhaps drive away memories of some of the worst early season batting Sussex have been guilty of in the last 20 years.

We will have to play a spinner, if only by default, as we don't have enough fit seamers. My money would be on Dockrell, not my choice, but who I think Robbo/Joyce will select

Hannon-Dalby, Milnes and Poysden to miss out? Hopefully Beer or Zaidi will be the spinner selected for Sussex. Magoffin, Hobden and Robinson should be the seamers selected.

I don't want to see Nash hiding down the order any more.

I don't want to see Nash hiding down the order any more. Nash, Wells, Joyce, Machan, Wright, Cachopa, Brown, Robinson, Magoffin, Hobden, Dockrell I almost agree: Nash and Wells to open, definitely Cachopa now that he looks to have recaptured his form and his brio, but probably Zaidi for Dockrell.

Half way through the Championship season and Sussex lie 6th, just 12 points ahead of bottom-placed Notts. Every game is important but this one surely is. Lose against Warwickshire and the relegation scrap begins. Yet, haven't we seen this same pattern play-out in recent seasons? Given the turn-a-round in the T20 Blast and given our senior Championship batsmen are all ready for a big score, this is the game where Sussex must copy their T20 comrades. Seemingly, we have the jinx over the Bears, so the team have every chance. For, to have only gained 12 batting points in 8 matches..! Fingers crossed. www.bbc.co.uk/sport/cricket/county-championship-division-one/table

What is astonishing is that Burgoyne is the seventh player in just a couple of years to be drafted into the squad mid-season. And i'm not even counting overseas signings in that.
The list runs Zaidi, Cachopa, Tredwell, Robinson, Linley, Dockrell and now Burgoyne.
The majority have been astute recruits - so let's hope Burgoyne keeps the trend going.
But what it must do for the confidence of the likes of Beer, Liddle and Piolet is another matter...

Why name three spinners in a squad of 13. This squad confirms what I feared which is that Beer has no future at Sussex and should ask to leave the county.
