Chris Nash pays tribute to his partner: "Luke Wright batted superbly and really showed his maturity. His century last week was the best T20 innings I have ever seen so for him to switch down the gears and play like he did today just shows what a fine player he is."

How times change. Nash scores a hundred and fraudster's become about as controversial as a pot of tea. Still, The Who are on at Glastonbury tonight so, to mix bands, The Song Remains The Same. Change bands more like. Gonna watch middle age men 'rock out' to old age men eh - good for you. The song really does remain the same at Glastonbury. Anyway, hey, in my second to last post, excluding this one, I used the word vendetta and I delivered a deliciously funny and borderline racist attack which would have seen me thrown to the lions by the elders three years ago. I ain't more conservative, this MB is more liberal. Can't upset anyone on here. Always on the look out for funny and/or racist attacks, fraudster but I couldn't see anything that gave me that little frisson, so you're alright this time. On the other hand I do agree about the middle-aged pensioners and the endless, tedious old cods....

Don't think this is completely true....he asked for his release because of " a stress related illness" ....was highly thought of England under 19 player before...has two first class centuries and got a ten for in the seconds. I admit I don't know how many ten fors will beer has got in the seconds.... putting the the boot on the other foot local horsham boy josh poysden was blocked by will beer in the seconds and could not get a contract ..., now making his championship debut for warwickshire. it is very difficult to predict the future....we lose poysden and mason crane, but we get Ollie Robinson and peter Burgoyne. I wish them all the luck in the world because actually making a successful career in cricket is not easy at all.

Times do change...not long ago we would have been looking a little sniffy about only 280-3 from a first day pitch, less than 3 runs per over, and only 2 points gained, but now it appears like manna in the wilderness. Sounds as if there is a strong prospect of more turn as the match progresses and therefore all the more important to build a convincing and powerful first innings lead. My hopes would be, first to get two more points from the remaining allowable14 overs , then with not more than a wicket lost in doing so, move on to something like 450 - the highest score at Edgbaston this season - and then look for a first innings lead of at least 100. Hopes like that may well be dashed, but to quote another elderly musician still writing and performing beautifully today, I Still Dream.
Enormous praise and respect both to Nash, for finding his form when we needed it and achieving a personal milestone with some style, and to Wright who has now become the all round batsman of style and character we hoped for. I still believe he should be the captain in all formats, and that this might liberate Joyce.

I can't see us scoring at five an over to reach 350 in time for the fourth batting point. If that had been our target, we would surely have batted differently last night. No, I think our intention is to strangle the game so the opposition has nothing to achieve bar survival.

No, I think our intention is to strangle the game so the opposition has nothing to achieve bar survival. You can see why we might want to strangle the game though. Eight result games so far with few batting points are making our position vulnerable. We can't afford a gung ho result match where we might win or lose. A draw with 3 batting points and hopefully 3 bowling points will at least keep us away from the bottom, particularly if Hampshire keep going as they did on the first day of their game.

I think we would all have taken 416 - 5 at lunch on day 2 (well I certainly would)!!!! Absolutely, and let's hope that this is the real turn of the tide for Sussex batting. The two hundred stands this innings are unique in any match this year, and only 7 have been made this season. Interestingly, Wright has figured in 4 of these as well as 3 of the 50+ partnerships, showing that he is much more than a talented hitter of the ball; he has become the fulcrum of the innings, the playmaker by whose success or failure the batting depends. Ben Brown, too, has done more than just score heavily. In match after match he has helped the tail eke out runs, sometimes to build the decisive , winning innings, as against Hampshire back in April, more often to lend some credibility to a faltering effort.
