Yep, shame on Yorkshire for that. I hope it's duly noted. As Rod, Jane and Freddy used to say, this is a free for all. Although they had something much more dispicable, yet temporarily fantastic, in mind. Filthy bunch. Anyway, a few more runs and I quite fancy Sri Lanka. Always a pleasure to read the fraudster and to try and work out what he's talking about, and sometimes, what he's been drinking.

Well, this thread's gone very quiet. What an abysmal display by England today - in all departments. I wonder if Cook will resign the captaincy after this awful all-round performance.

How dare you! Just half a lager usually.
Oh dear oh dear oh dear. I don't wanna seem like I'm persecuting Cook, I don't want the mods doing a Borderman/Dobell on my arse, but this chap has to take the criticism on board right now. He's getting it from all quarters and the best he can do is come out and say it must stop. Well it ain't gonna mate, because you're England captain. One thing you can do to stem it though is to take it on board and change your defensive ways.
We are now gonna lose a home Test series to an ordiary Sri Lanka side and it's all down to Cook inexplicably not declaring earlier in the first test - well largely. This is a disasterous beginning to this 'new England' side. Cook couldn't have written the script worse for this series and to top it off his own form is desperate - probably because he's fretting about the criticism of his horrendously negative and diabolically unimaginative captaincy.

Have to agree with the half-pint drinking fraudster. Cook cannot be allowed to continue as captain. He lost the Ashes 5-0 and now he's about to hand Sri Lanka their first ever series victory in England. He should have resigned the captaincy when Flower went and concentrated on getting his batting back.
He went in to open this afternoon after captaining in the field for 132 overs. The only surprise was that after that draining experience he managed to last as long as 15 overs. His mind must have been totally scrambled after the complete horlicks he had made of things while England were bowling.
So who should be captain - Ian Bell? Personally I'd go down on one knee and beg KP to do it. But Downton has well and truly blown that possibility and we all know Moores largely got the job because he was the one heavyweight applicant who agreed that he didn't want Kev back. Whatever happens, it has to be 'anyone but Cook' - not least because we need him to rediscover the art of scoring runs.
Can't wait to read what Ali's nemesis Shane Warne has to say.

Somewhere I hear the sounds of KP having a quiet chuckle.

KP should concentrate on scoring a few runs if he wants to gloat. It seems to be overlooked that he hasn't had a decent score for months. Having witnessed yesterdays play at Headingley massive praise should go to the Sri Lankans for their astonishing effort. Matthews was immense. Cook cannot take all the blame. All the bowlers were hopeless and seemed incapable of bowling line and length unlike the Sri Lankans who reaped the rewards.Going to the last rites this morning only £5 to see a famous victory.

A few months ago, on a board with a not dissimilair name to this one, I remember speculating about the likely path of Cook's captaincy. I thought that England would prepare mostly green wickets for the Sri Lankans and that in those conditions England's swing bowlers would probably give Cook a couple of vicrories which would mask his poor tactical and man-management skills and therefore take him into the India series. Once there, my reasoning went, he would very quickly find himself on the end of humiliating defeats as harder wickets and the preponderance of spin from the Indians unanswerable by England, exposed all of his shortcomings. I foresaw a mid-series resignation conference, although I was not certain about his replacement - I think I suggested Root but without great conviction.
Well, we didn't quite get the pitches right and we didn't quite have the bowling attack I and others assumed - I seem to remember borderman suggesting that Onions would come back into the side and pick up a hatful on damp wickets - and it doesn't look as if we'll reach the Indian part of the drubbing without further massive changes. Other than a change of leadership its hard to see what else could be done to the side, given the newness of most of the batsmen and the lack of spinners in England, or indeed any other part of the United Kingdom.
It has been interesting listening to Swann on Test Match Special this summer. He has been quite witty, and fairly perceptive, and his anecdotes have been to the point, without any lurid revelations. I've been struck by some of his remarks in this Test about Anderson particularly, and others in the side. He has said that the biggest issue for a captain is man-management and followed it up with funny stories about the extreme temperamentalism of Anderson, his single-mindedness and his unforgiving nature, bordering on the pathological, when catches go down off his bowling. What emerges is a picture of a group of very talented, very consciously elite individuals who have become used to being indulged, and whose demanding nature calls for very balanced management. Swann and Pietersen have gone, Trott too, but several remain and it doesn't look as if Cook can rise above his long apprenticeship as one of the boys to take a commanding position that wins him the respect of his star performers, a respect that is demonstrated by their willingness to change their approach. It is this aspect of Cook's captaincy rather than the negative, safety first, approach that can no longer be ignored or explained away by troubles with Flower/Pietersen/superfast bowling/mass defections. He simply doesn't have what it takes to read and react to changed circumstance, and he doesn't carry his key players with him. His own batting form has dropped away almost completely as he struggles with a task that is clearly beyond him. We need that batting even if we don't need the dithering.
I still don't have a clear view of who should succeed him long-term, although I still think that Root will do so one day, and probably do it very well. I think the time has come for Moores to call Bell in and tell him he must take up the responsibility of a senior player, indeed the sole senior player remaining who would have credibility in that role. The fact the Bell himself, Swann and others have said that Bell isn't cut out for it, feels comfortable in his middle-order role, etc, etc, merely smacks of more of that elite group smugness about the way that the group view determines how individuals see themselves. It could really unleash all of the class and style of Bell, that we so desperately need to see: a dominating player who will lead a new team to rebuild itself.

Alternatively giving the captaincy to Bell could do the same as it has to Cook and another career goes into decline. I am glad it is not my decision to make.

For me it's the vapid, tabloid silliness of phrases such as his description of Cook as "more mouse than Strauss; more phoney than Dhoni" that devalue and detract from what might otherwise have been a serious piece of analysis. That's the sort of playing to the gallery that is best left to Shane Warne. And having claimed Prior's injury was "long term" and more serious than we were being told and that Davies would keep wicket in this series, he doesn't like being proved wrong and seems determined to take it out on Matt. The claim that Prior "has flapped like a seal and dropped like a stone" since his return to the side is another piece of downright silliness.

Cook has to go. He has no management skills, or we don't see any. He's the typical corporate manager (MD/CEO) good when things are good and don't need doing. Shown up for being clueless about everything and worse, no personality or wit to appearing charming when things get a bit tough. Who to replace him? That is a hard one. I cannot think of anyone at the moment. Bell? limp? Anderson or Broad? Too self obsessed? Prior? Concentrate on his own game is enough. It's a tough one.
I also think Robson, (right handed Cook clone) & Ballance (One dimensional, poor footwork) are not good enough. Johnson and Co must be licking their lips, chomping at the bit to get to these guys. I'd pick Lyth and Stoneman, guys with a bit of flair. I also think that Stokes will come in for Jordan as the all rounder. Jordan told to score more runs in CC. That'll please a few here!

When the final nail is thumped into the England batting coffin today, is this the time for Cook to resign? The media calls may be immense. If so, the ECB will have egg all over their face with Downton and Whitaker taking the brunt. The problem being as everyone says, who is to take Cook's place? Surely, Bell cannot be considered. Broad, Prior... some are even suggesting Morgan? Given he's not even in the team, that is how desperate the situation is. What is so sad about this whole debacle is that KP has done just as badly as England/Cook since the sacking. No-one has come out of this well. The 'Back KP campaign' spearheaded by Piers Morgan are gloating, now Boycott joins the Warne cries of resign... it is difficult to know how this whole fiasco can go away. Only if England start winning consistently again will the detractors back off, but that is highly unlikely in the short to medium term. What a mess! If the ECB want a team of cloned yes-men, finding the right captain is never going to be easy. www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/cricket/27988472

I haven't overlooked the fact that KP has underperformed, and I would have dropped him for a test or two in Australia as a wake up call! But I cannot go along with 'sacking' him when he was the least bad of the batsmen in Australia. But you are right in that Cook's bowlers and fielders haven't helped him, why is that? None of our shortcomings exposed in the winter have been addressed, why is that?
