Time for a new thread, as the selection process nears completion, or has already been completed, with announcements to be made tomorrow. My suggested squad for the two games, with appropriate adjustments to be made for weather and state of pitch, etc, based on the games I've seen recently and the usual highly reliable sources of rumour, gossip and blatant favouritism are: Cook Robson Compton Bell Root Moeen Ali Ballance Brown (yes, Ben Brown, the highest championship total of dismissals last season and just shaded in this by Prior's keeping in the current match - and also an extremely good batsman) Stokes Jordan Broad Anderson Finn I will now retire behind the barricades

Newell not in the Notts dressing room today as he is at the selection meeting.
My XI for the first Test (which is not necessarily the XI I think will play; nor am I going to cheat like hh and pick a squad of 13):
Cook Root Compton Bell Ballance Patel Stokes Foster (wkt) Jordan Broad Anderson
The closest call for me was between Patel and Panesar...

I think you'll find the selectors will cheat, too, borderman. My closest call for omission will be between Robson and Ballance. If Robson doesn't play, like you I'd have Root opening. And if the wicket and conditions look really soggy and humid, I'd say let the batsmen prove themselves, and attack with Finn rather than Stokes. But I daresay we'll both be wrong.

Please. Here's my eleven, which is obviously the best one - I mean eleven. Wells Shoare Machan Finch Jackson Hudson-Prentice Beer Mushtaq Ahmed Whittingham Hatchett Hobden Yeah I lost it. Here's my real eleven: Cook Robson Root Bell Ballance Stokes Buttler Broad Jordan Anderson Panesar

What's it worth not to tell CJ you reckon he should bat below Plunkett and Broad, Jon ?

Well, here it is:
England squad Alastair Cook (Essex) (Captain) Moeen Ali (Worcestershire) James Anderson (Lancashire) Gary Ballance (Yorkshire) Ian Bell (Warwickshire) Stuart Broad (Nottinghamshire) Chris Jordan (Sussex) Liam Plunkett (Yorkshire) Matt Prior (Sussex) Sam Robson (Middlesex) Joe Root (Yorkshire) Chris Woakes (Warwickshire)
Woakes?!?!
What kind of choice is it between Woakes and Plunkett?
National selector, James Whitaker, said: “The selectors would like to congratulate all the players selected in the squad for the 1st Investec Test against Sri Lanka. We would also like to acknowledge the contribution of both the County and England Performance Programme coaches in helping to develop the talents of Sam Robson, Liam Plunkett, Moeen Ali and Chris Woakes. All four have carried their exciting winter form into the domestic season to earn well deserved recognition."
Woakes - 4 8 1 107 27 15.28 0 0 2. 100.3 28 293 16 5-63 18.31 1 0

Stokes being punished for recent bad behaviour? It's the only possible explanation for prefering Woakes.
Robson is older than I realised; I see he's 25 in three weeks time, so it has to be now or never for him. I was thinking he should be made to wait a little longer but that view was based on my ignorace. He looks about 17, and I thought he was no more than 21-22.

So its not just the policemen that look young, then? But to be serious, if I must, it is said that Stokes' omission is because of a lack of bowling since coming back from operation Hurt Locker. He has bowled 37 2 161 5. Broad, by the way has bowled 51 10 177 5.

No surprises with Prior and Jordan but Chris must still be pinching himself. Talk about being in the right place at the right time. Since joining Sussex it has been a whirlwind. Surely, now, Robinson must seek out another seamer to replace him. Is it possible to extend Arafat's contract to Championship cricket? www.theargus.co.uk/sport/11258126.Jordan_and_Prior_in_Test_squad/?ref=eb

It's possible but we would then lose Magoffin!
Only real option is to find someone for a loan spell who is languishing in the seconds somewhere in a second division team (although they would have to be better than Hatchett and Hobden and be within our price range)

Are you that obsessed by 'general cricket' that you don't even know who our OS player is? Getting in some bod who's 'languishing' in the seconds of a div 2 team would be an astonishingly stupid thing to do when we have our own bowlers languishing in our second team - why would we want a player who can't get in a div 2 team you...? It's the sort of astonishingly stupid thing we might do though. It would make me sick.

I'm not sure CJ was ever languishing in Surrey's seconds though Wally, but I take your point. So maybe Meaker? I'll concede that Althyman's suggestion isn't 'astonishingly stupid' like some plank said it was but the the guy who said S&F's question was 'astonishingly stupid' was right, that is astonishingly stupid and I back him unreservedly in his shooting down of that particular half-witted comment.
